Just back from the inital surgeon visit. AVR scheduled for 1/25, with the heart cath on 1/24. Had a very good discussion on valve choice with the surgeon...I swear he reads these posts, as everything we discussed I've read here! Valve selection made, date set. I can really see the mountain summit now!

Just a side comment...I know the recent posts on valve selection being what they are...well...I devoured every word in making my decission. I thank all the regulars that post...all sides....please do not stop.

Congrats on setting the date. I wish you all the best. What valve did you decide on? Just curious. Please keep us informed on what is going on with you. It is really great to have this site and all these great people!!

Put you on the calendar for the 25th and sending best wishes for an easy climb over the mountain. I hope you can have someone update us on your progress.

So 1/25 is the first day of the rest of your wonderful life! Congratulations and you have my prayers.

Congratulations on setting a date! If you're anything like me, the next couple of weeks will be full of awe and appreciation for life, loved ones, and those in whose hands your care will rest on and just after the big day.

You will be in the thoughts and prayers of many who have gone before you and of many who will follow.

Now. Who's going to get this guy a Tawdry Shirt?

Glad you have your date set. The next couple weeks will be full of anticipation and wondering. This is the hardest time but make the best of it. When you get to the other side of the mountain with us, you'll be very happy. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. The nerves are setting in already! Of course, we're experiencing lake effect snow squalls here, so I get to wonder how the weather will be in 2 weeks!
My name is Tom Price, and live just north of Syracuse, NY (Go Orange!). My wife Liz, although computer challenged, will be in charge of surgery updates!
As long distance runners are VERY goal oriented, I 'm thinking about my goal for recovery being the 2007 VR marathon team.....

Hi Tom -

Hope all goes well for you with your surgery and welcome to the site!

Congrats......

Congrats......

*Congratulations Tom on having a date set for your surgery. With your outlook and goal for recovery Im sure you will 'S A I L ' over that mountain. Keep us posted.....

Congrats on your surgery date! I live in Oneida and we got some of the lake effect snow yesterday too. I hear Upstate and St. Joeseph's are great places for heart valve replacements. Marcie

Here's a mantra for you. YOU WILL BE FINE. They know what they're doing and will take good care of you. either valve will work out great. here's to an uneventful, safe, successful surgery and recovery! ;)

Tom,

Glad we could help with your decision on valve choice. It is quite a conundrum to perform your own internal risk analysis trying to determine which valve would be "better".

Congrats on making your decisions on surgeon, valve, and date. Now its time to get ready, plan and execute.

I think having a recovery goal/plan is a great idea. I planned to have surgery on Tues and home on Sat. I had surgery on Tues and was home Friday morning. I did have one trip back two weeks later (for 25 hours) due to pericardial effusion. But overall, I still beat my goal of out of the hospital less than 96 hours after surgery.

Sure I had to adjust my "plan" for the unexpected trip back, but hey, I always believe executing to a plan gets the best result. Its a mindset thing.

Best wishes,

David

Hi again, Tom -

I didn't sail back quite like David did. I was in the hospital for a week, longer than I'd hoped because my kidneys didn't want to work again, or my bp was too low, or both. It slowed my recovery down a little bit. Then I was rehospitalized for a few days (nearly a week after I got home from the AVR) to be put on some heavy duty A-fib medication. But those were the worst problems in my experience and were pretty minor in the scheme of life. It seems that nearly everyone seems to have at least a minor recovery glitch, though there are certainly some exceptions to that here on this site.

Anyway, even if your initial recovery takes a bit longer, it does not necessarily mean that it will be a "lesser" recovery for you. Hopefully you'll be one of those who just sails through the whole thing! Either way, you're likely going to feel MUCH BETTER on the other side of your AVR:D!

we'll be waiting and watching, Tom. And will welcome your dear wife when she posts in your stead.

You have really been a good student of the site and learned so much. I am sure it surprises many doctors that members of VR are so educated.

Thanks to Hank, this site has become famous. VR will hit the airwaves one of these days.

Best of luck Tom. Keep laughing, joking and maintaining a positive spirit and this will be nothing but "thing." Of course you'll have a lovely scar -kinda like a permanent T-shirt- to remind you every day about it, but if that's the worst thing that happens, than so be it. I'm thinking about getting a snake tattoo on my scar! Then I'll look really cool at the beach.
