Dave, ChristinaL, Millissa and other Denver folks..are you ready for round #2? ..How about you, Rain and Al?..Wonder if Gina from Chicago..who is vacationing out there..made it home? How about Dennis in New Mexico.. Are you home, Dennis?Talking about a mess on the interstates, again.. 18 inches by Sat?Just in the Denver area..... Let us know if we need to send care packages:D Bonnie

I'm trying to figure out a way to get some of Dave's snow! I think he and Marsha should fill up a pickup, and bring me some, but I don't know if our bonds of friendship are that strong!;) :p
Bob's brother lives in Cheyenne, WY, and they're expecting alot of the white stuff, too.
Take care everyone, and let us know how much you get!:)

We still hanging out Bonnie! Extended holiday:D Main roads back to Denver. 70 & 6 pass are now closed. Mostly do to accidents. Roads are really not bad. Has not snowed much in the mountains as of yet. We are expecting guests Sat and Sunday. One group from Denver......another from SFO. Hopefully they can get here!

Skiing has been wonderful! Great place to be stuck if you must:D

so glad you are tucked away in Summit County and having a great time with all the fresh snow. Sounds like your apres ski is going to last a couple of days instead of a couple of hours! Oh what the heck - have another hot toddy in front of the fire! :D

Yes, we are getting more snow here in Colorado. I guess one of our Denver newscasters said this is the first time in the last 20 years of his being a meteorologist that Colorado has had back-to-back snowstorms like this.

It is pretty wild - people who were flying in and out of DIA last week at the start of the holidays had such a terrible time and now the same people are ending their vacations the same way - it is a mess! Oh, but it is pretty. So far here in Estes Park, I believe we have about 3 inches of snow but it only started snowing about four hours ago.

Some meteorologists say this could be the "perfect" storm.

Happy New Year everyone!

TY you Christina:) Done for today. My family is still out there. Facing the mountain....visibility to the top is slim. Can't see the divide now:mad:

I hit the market on 12/24. Items like bagged salads, eggs, bacon, pancake mix, bread,....nothing on the shelves! They were stocked well this AM! Really does not look like it's gonig to be as bad as the last one. Time will tell. In the meantime....let's get out there and enjoy that beautiful white stuff! We plan on doing a little tubing tomorrow!

Stay warm CO members!

PS> Christina....what do you think they are insinuating "perfect storm?

There is a major weather front coming in from the West Coast and another front swinging up from New Mexico coming in from the SE. I guess if these two storms collide just right, it will be the "perfect storm" per the meteorologists. Who knows what is going to transpire.

Now it is really snowing here in Estes - we have at least half a foot of snow or more - I was skeptical that we could get another big snow, but we just may!

Enjoy the snow and great skiing (and tubing) and the rest of your vacation - sorry to hear that groceries were slim picking - they are here, too - you will just have to go out to eat at one of those great ski area restaurants! :)

One of my fav places in Summit County is the Sunshine Cafe in Silverthorne - they have the BEST breakfasts! I'm sure you have already discovered it.

Wish I could be there. where are you?..When is your daughter due to be back in school? From what they are saying on national T.V..Denver airport..will be a mess. again.. .......Enjoy, stay warm:) Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

Keystone. School back in session on 1/8....we have time to get home. :)

Local news....UA has cancled 100 flights out of Denver. I would just play things by ear if you are travling. If it looks bad tomorrow. Rebook for another day. Or maybe try to avoid Denver for the next few days! This is very unusual for the area. According to the media.....average snowfall for Dec is about 8". Which seems low?

Travel safe everyone. For now....we can walk to where we need to go!

I know they

I know they

are cancelling flights at DIA and it is snowing "buckets" up here in Estes Park -big, white, fluffy flakes - very beautiful. Just picture the last scene in the movie White Christmas where they open the doors at the back of their stage and you see (fake) snow coming down - that is what it looks like. :)

Gina, were they talking about 8 inches average in Denver for Decembers? What people don't realize is that the mountains are where the snow is (most of the time)- really Colorado is considered semi-arid and we would have no green lawns at all if it weren't for sprinkling systems. :( The plains and Front Range of Colorado are pretty dry and the mountains even had a lack of snow up until about last year.

I think we are getting back to normal in our weather pattern. I always ponder how perfect God's design was - He/She makes the snow to fall in the mountains to provide water to the plains and valleys through the entire year. Really ingenious! ;) It always amazes me to see the rushing mountain rivers all through the summer - from the melting snow - and also, of course, heavy rains on the peaks in the summer. The rivers never dry up completely.

BTW - for the rest of the country to know - Colorado LOVES to play up their snowstorms. ;) However, last week's and this snow ARE what you have seen on the national news. It is MONEY for the ski industry if people think that Colorado is only about snow! There's snow business like snow business!!!

Christina L

Christina-
Think they were refering to Denver in general. Our friends in Denver have a sprinkler system...and use it! Usually the front range, i.e. Denver does not get much in the way of accumulation. When it does...I hear it melts off quickly. These two storms are reversed...where is appears some of the mountain areas will get less.

Ahhhhh. snow biz. You bet. We do pay dearly for it! Very expensive. We have taken vacations to the beach for less! Memories are priceless!

Christina....do you plan on attending the Durango reunion? At this point....we do!

And I thought you

And I thought you

out-of-staters got the best ski packages! ;) :p Yes, skiing is mega expensive, isn't it?

We have storms in Colorado that they call "up-slope" systems where the Front Range will get more snow than the mountains and they love those, as the Front Range is so dry. You must not be getting so much snow in Summit County. We sure are here. It is piling up and maybe we will get as much/if not more than last week.

Wayne and I would LOVE to come to Durango for the reunion. I have to say that SW/South Central Colorado is probably the most beautiful part of the state, even though a lot of people will tell you that Rocky Mountain National Park is. I just prefer the SW corner of Colorado for its unspoiled beauty and lack of people. Ha. We are tentatively planning on making it to the reunion - it is a GREAT reason to visit that part of the state. People here on VR.com would be crazy not to go to the reunion in Durango. The summer (dry) air in Colorado - the shining mountains - dining al fresco - it is a slice of heaven. :)

Gina - have a great rest of your vacation! Wish I was there sharing a hot chocolate with peppermint Schnapps with you! (Do I know my apres ski cocktails or WHAT? - now if I just knew how to ski...) :D Hope you have a safe flight home without too much aggravation at DIA.

Aye ... I must admit [despite the fact that I hate driving in snow with the "morons" (I'm trying to be nice ... I know, so not in my nature ;)) who think that just because they have FWD or AWD or 4WD they can drive through snow with no problems whatsoever ... and then criticize me for driving RWD in snow], I am VERY jealous of ya'll who are getting snow right now. And, I know my Mom (who used to live in CO, Haxtun to be exact) is even more jealous than I am ... he he.

SO ... ENJOY THIS.

And share pics.

Or else.

*grins devilishly*

My husband and I were very poor newlyweds in Summit County; lived in Dillon for awhile and then in a little cabin in Silverthorne, almost across the street from the fire station. We heated with a wood stove and the worst temperature we saw our last winter there was 44 degrees below zero, not including the wind chill! B-r-r-r!!! The cabin isn't there now; it's a parking lot for some park access to the Blue River, which used to be in our backyard; we could literally fish for our supper! Even though times werent easy, we have such happy memories of those simple times. My husband's work was very physically demanding though and he now absolutely HATES SNOW! We took a quick drive out to Durango maybe three weekends ago or so and went through quite a nasty little late pm storm between Cortez and Durango. My husband hated it but I just love that kind of weather.

BTW - we stayed in the Doubletree right on the Animas while in Durango and it was WONDERFUL! That might be a nice place for the reunion next fall?!

Hey Granbonny:

Hey Granbonny:

I got to this thread a little late, but thanks for thin king of me. The first big storm hit the day we left. Our road is very steep, huge drop offs, & no safety barriers. So-since I knew Mrs. Smith was wasn't going to even consider delaying the trip to see Ellie, I parked the car at the foot of the mountain the day before the snow arrived, and we started the first mile of the trip to Puerto Rico on my ATV.

When we got to the airport in Albuquerque, the mess in Denver wiped out the first leg of our flight to Chicago. The airline people said no room on any flight to O'Hare. Albuquerque has free hi-speed wireless internet, so we went to a corner and found one they missed. The guy was impressed, and booked us & 2 other people on that flight.

We arrived at O'Hare having missed our connecting flight to Puerto Rico, with no clue as to luggage. We had to get a room near the airport, and were there 2 hours early to get the 1 flight to Puerto Rico. Big problem-because we had been given paper tickets when we changed flights, we couldn't print a boarding pass at any Kiosk, etc. The airport personnel were over-whelmed, there seemed to be one line for everything, and it wasn't moving nearly fast enough to get on the plane.

That's when we had the idea that saved the trip. As hard as it was, we left the line we had been standing in for an hour, and went outside to get into the long (but much shorter) line for curb-side check-in, even though we had no baggage to check. We stood nearly an hour in this line, with only partial protection from the rain. When we got to the front I had a wad of bills in my hand for the tip, we got our boarding pass and made the flight.

I am a little concerned about our flight back on Jan 2nd, but for now hope to enjoy the weather and beach.

Holy cow, Dennis ... you weren't all that far from me (or the rest of us in the Chicagoland area, for that matter). Would've been nice to meet up...he he.

Glad you made it! Have fun :).
