Joe is going to the hospital for day surgery (I hope), on Friday. He is having an AV Fistula made for dialysis. That is where they marry a vein and an artery to make a permanent huge venous access for the dialysis needles.

The cardiologist said today that it puts extra pressure on the heart, but he should be fine.

I guess I'm a little gunshy for him for any procedure. So please keep him in mind.

Will be thinking of you both on Friday, Nancy. Please be sure to let us know how it goes and take care of yourself as well.

Nancy,

My thoughts are always with you and Joe. I bet all will be fine but of course you have every reason to be gun shy.

I just saw our close friend that has every medical problem known to man. Diabetes and everything else that can go wrong or become a complication. He also has had an AVR.

He is thriving on dialysis for the past two years. I couldn't get over how good he looked this week end. He is on a transplant list but seems to be doing well with dialysis albeit very bored at the time it takes.

Is this a definite or a just in case AV fistula?

Best to you and Joe,
Donna

You and Joe have my prayers and wishes....

You and Joe have my prayers and wishes....

I hope all goes well for you both on Friday, and this won't put too much of a strain on his heart....Harrybaby:D

Prayers for both of you! Hopefully this will be a non-event, you all have been through so much!

Hi Nancy and Joe -

Hope all goes well Friday. Is this a fairly common surgery and necessity for dialysis?

Hi Nancy, I will most definitely be thinking of both you and Joe on Friday. Hope everything goes smoothly and easily!

You will most definitely

You will most definitely

be in my thoughts and prayers - both Joe and you, Nancy. I know he will do just fine!

Blessings -

I'll put him in my prayers starting tonight--can't start too early with Joe.

Thanks everyone.

Donna-

Joe has a Tesio catheter now, but that has to go at some point, since it is a source of infection. It is his second one. His first one became infected almost right away. The AV Fistula is the permanent (or close to it) fix. So dialysis is no doubt, for life. He has very little output now, thanks to all the physical stress of his recent problems, and subsequent renal failure, both chronic and acute.

It is hard to believe, but they have removed 24 pounds of fluid from him in two months' time. He is close to his dry weight, but still has some fluid to get rid of. It is "third spaced" and thus stubbornly hanging on.

Dialysis is a rigorous regimen, the diet, the fluid restriction, plus the treatments themselves which are draining (play on words:p ) and boring and long.

But many people owe their life to dialysis, and at least it is keeping his CHF under control.

He's been dancing on the edge of dialysis for years.
