Robbie, Noel's wife, just called from UAB. Noel did wonderfully well coming through surgery, but his heart did hold a few surprises for Dr. McGiffin. Although they thought after the echo and TEE, done before surgery, that the mitral valve could be repaired, once they got in there they discovered that the mitral valve probably needed to be replaced, the aortic valve also needed replacement, and Noel had a hole between the chambers that no one knew about.
The bottom line is he has twin mechanical valves and the hole has been fixed.
Robbie sounded so relieved!
And I'm so glad they sought the help of Dr. McGiffin and UAB!:) :)

Great news Mary. Thanks for posting it. Wishing Noel a continued good recovery!!

Great news, Mary. Although they had to do more than expected, it sounds like he will be good to resume a quality life soon. Please extend my best wishes for an uneventful recovery!:D

I guess that confirms that you never know what to expect. Like the others, please pass on my best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Great news for Noel and Robbie! I pray his recovery goes smoothly. Looks like he got his money's worth out of the surgeon. Was it Buy One, Get One day at UAB?

His surgery is a great example why we say that even with TEE's and CT's and MRI's that they really don't know what the surgeons have to work with until they get in there and see it up close and personal. Sometimes it's not as bad as they think and sometimes there's extra surprises.

That's great!! I also had a hole between my left atrium and right atrium which no one knew about. From what I've heard, everyone is born with that hole, but since our lungs start working when we are born, it is then supposed to close up, but in some people never does. Anyhow, that's great that they got everything fixed!

Thanks, Mary ..for the update...Birmingham has had pretty nasty weather today. Hope, Robbie will be able to stay nearby..tonight........and hope Noel has a good night..:) Bonnie

Great News!

Please send them my best wishes when you are able. That is great news! More than they expected for sure, but great news none the less.

Thats great news for Noel and his family.

I've just been with Ben at the hospital. He is as sore as Noel is I expect! Lots of TLC for them both over the coming weeks.
