and my aortic valve replacement. Big day.

Hi everyone.

I've only posted a couple of time but I've been devouring all your information and emotions. It felt only right to return just a little.

I'm schecduled to go into hospital for an AVR on Tuesday in around 36 hours time. It's my first OHS and sometimes I'm fairly cool with it, the rest of the time I'm filled with white-knuckle fear. As the hours tick away it becomes much more of the latter. I can imagine you all were, or in the case of pre-opers are, much the same so I can't really add anything (except more neurosies).

I just want to offer congratulations who are on the other side of the mountain and deep serenity and true courage (two properties that maybe are related more closely than people think) for those who aren't. I hope mine holds.

Looking forward to a scar and a little time in bed.

Ben

P.S Does anyone know what sort of sedation they can offer in surgery pre-op? I don't really want to know what's happeneing beforehand but all accounts from this site seem pretty lucid.

Ben - wishing you a very good surgery and will remember you in my prayers.

I think you will be pretty well asleep by the time you get to the OR. But make sure you tell your anesthesiologist or your surgeon that you don't really want to be awake for all the immediate pre-op prep.

I don't know about Australia but in England I was pretty far out of it and only vaguely remember them coming for me with the trolley. I certainly do not remember anything beyond that until a voice said "Why is she still in here?" in ICU just before they threw me out of there and into High Dependency. I don't even remember the ventilator.

Wishing you the best!
My sister's bf was out with the crew of team New Zealand sailing around.. have some great photos!

As for pre med.. They put some Verced (conscious sedation) into my IV.. I remember Nothing .. not even saying good bye to my dh and being wheeled away..
It was some pretty good stuff.
They used it again when I had my pericardiocentesis..and I don't remember a thing:rolleyes: I am very happy about that!

Hang in there..you will soon be on the other side.. and on the road to recovery!

I also had my PVR surgery the day of the mid-term elections 16 years ago. Needless to say I was a little busy to have voted. I didn't think to vote absentee ballot.

Ben,
Crossing my fingers for you that the next 24 hours fly by for you and Wishing you a successful surgery and easy recovery.

Take Care!

They gave me a shot of morphine about 45 minutes before preparing me for surgery. I think I was awake about 1 minute after the shot. The next thing I knew my husband was waking me up in the evening saying the surgery had been a success!

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks everyone. That makes me feel much better. Another quick question- I've just woken up with a cold, do you think they'll still proceed?

I think you should call the hospital tomorrow morning and tell them. I hate to say this, but it is probably a good idea to put it off, and I have a feeling they will probably tell you that (although I could be wrong). I know it's really disappointing when you finally have it in your head that you are going to get this thing over with, but you don't want complications due to the cold.

Mornin, Ben. I was rolled into the OR. It was cold. They told me it would be cold and they would have warmED sheets. They may have already put in the IV (I don't remember) but my last memory is of being wrapped in those lovely warmed sheets and dropping right out of the world until I woke after surgery. I expect if you asked, your dr might let you have something to calm you early that morning if you need it - just ask. We'll be waiting to hear from you (maybe somebody can let us know tomorrow?). GODSPEED!

Ben - I hope everything works out and you can go ahead and get the surgery over with. I am in the "waiting room" also and know that having to postpone would be awful. Good luck and let us know what you are going to do! Godspeed!

to begin, good luck and God Speed.

As far as pre-op meds, they sedated me rather quickly.
I became very unhappy as they started all of the preperation for the surgery, so they chose to sedate me.
i am glad in hindsight that they did.

Good luck Ben - check with your surgeon if you have or recently had a cold.

They made me walk myself into the OR and hop up on the table. It was very cold and they put warmed blankets on me. I already had an IV line in me, so they started the sedation, and the anestheseologist held my hand and spoke to me. He was very kind, and kept me very calm. I was out pretty quick.
