I've been up since 3:00 coughing so hard that I'm coughing up blood. I've also got a terrible head cold. I got my pneeumonia shot last Tuesday and I have gone down hill ever since. I am supposed to have my knee surgery this coming Monday, November 6th and the orthopedic said there is no way he will do surgery unless I am completely clear by this Friday. I am taking double strength antibotics, a very strong cold medicine and it seems I am getting worse instead of better. What to do now? I so wanted to get this over with so I could start walking normal again in the very near future. Also delaying the surgery is going to push me farther into the holiday season and I wanted to be up walking good by then. Maybe this is the way the Lord is telling me not to have this surgery yet.

Please say a special prayer for me that I can knock this stuff by this Friday. I don't understand why I have to be completely clear because they were only going to do a spinal block and not put me completely asleep. I did tell him that I sure didn't want to hear them chizzling away on me. He said they would make sure that I couldn't hear. Maybe I could wear some head phones playing music. Would they allow that in a operating room?

Prayers are on the way, Glenda. Have you been to your pcp for this cold?

Well, they wouldn't want you to cough or sneeze while they were doing their more delicate work now, would they?

You might wind up with an extra dimple in your knee, or one inserted backwards, so you'd have to walk like an ostrich. Or they could mistakenly put in an extra kneecap or stitch your patella to your toe. You want to be careful with coughs and sneezes in the OR.

Glenda, they worry about further infection. You're less able to resist when you're already sick. And if you're lying supine with head cold gunk collecting in your lungs during a protracted knee surgery, you might have difficulty moving it out later, another opportunity for Mr. Microbe.

Very best wishes,

I agree, you certainly don't want to get sicker :(

I will say a prayer that you can knock this out ASAP!!!! You've been through enough!

Glenda,
I'll say an extra prayer that you are clear and ready to go by Friday. However, I'm with Bob; if you're not, then it's just not meant to happen next week.
By the way, no cold medicine I've ever taken has ever helped me recover more quickly from a cold. I usually up my consumption of liquids by 100% and that seems to work as well as anything.
Drink, Drink, Drink!
Love,
Mary

Ditto here! And like Mary said fluids, fluids, fluids!! Prayers sent your way!

Prayers going up from me Glenda...

Prayers going up from me Glenda...

I sure hope you feel better soon, as I know how bad colds can get-with my lung trouble, everything seems to amplify itself-Anyway, prayers are being sent up now, and I am sending you tons of ((((((((((((Hugs)))))))))))))))) to help squeeze out this illness. Harrybaby:D :D

Holidays or not, if your even remotely feeling under the weather, cancel it! It's not worth the risks involved if your sick. You have my prayers, but hon, if your sick, reconsider please.

Glenda:

Have you called your PCP or internist today?

The reason a surgeon wouldn't want to operate is because surgery stresses the body & immune system. Right now, your immune system is working overtime to kick this horrible cold.
You were probably incubating this nasty bug when you got the pneumonia shot. Immunizations stress the immune system, so that could have been a trigger.

Please check with your doctor. Let us know that you're getting better really fast!

Hoping you feel better Glenda - but I agree, much as you want to get the surgery over with, don't do it if you're body is already stressed and vulnerable.

I completely agree with the comment about the cold medicine - it seems to reduce the symptoms, but prolongs the cold much longer than without it.

Glenda, I hope your plans work out. However, you know and we know you know that we need to be careful about these things. You certainly don't want it messed up and have a do over. Go with the flow, drink your fluids, take your meds - and let go, then let God. Blessins.......

You guys are so great, better than any friends that I could ever have. I had to break down and go to my pcp yesterday because I was feeling worse and instead of just coughing up blood, it was coming out of my nose too. I also was running about 103 fever. It's been a long time since I have ever been this sick. When I called the doctor's office his nurse said they were so over-booked but he could see me Thursday and she proceeded to ask what my symptoms were, she left to go talk to the doctor and came back on the phone and said to get to the doctor's office immediatley. When I got there they ushered me right on back in front of about 15 people already waiting in the waiting room. Boy, did they ever give me dirty looks! They did an x-ray and I have pneumonia. :( :( He put me a stronger antibotic and said I wouldn't be going into surgery until I'm completely clear of infection. He also gave me a cough medicine. I went to bed last night at 9:00 and slept through the complete night without coughing one time. This morning I thought "Great" I'm curred, now I can go ahead with the surgery on Monday, well guess what, it's not going to happen. I started coughing again just a minute ago so I'm going to call and reschedule the surgery for couple of weeks later. I sure hate to think about being in the hospital for Thanksgiving. Bummer Oh well, one way to look at it, I won't have to cook.:) :)

Bob, you are so funny but it's so true. You said exactly what the pcp said. I'm was going to have a spinal block so I wouldn't be completely under. He said they could take no chance of me having a coughing fit during the surgery. Walk like an ostrich! ! !:D :D

Mary, a sweet little lady at church Sunday hugged me and said "maybe God wasn't ready for me to have this surgery yet and knowing me, it would have to be an act of God to stop me from doing something." Bless her heart and yours too.

Love you all! I'll let you know when the date has been rescheduled.

So glad you got in so quickly with the pcp and hope the antibiotics work fast! That's one tricky way to get out of Thanksgiving, Glenda ;) , but I hope you are able to have the surgery and be all set for Christmas. Take care of yourself and feel better quick.

Thank goodness you saw the doctor and got a diagnosis.
BUT REMEMBER . . . you are NOT cured one or two days after starting the antibiotics!!!!
No Ma'm, No way!

I know how your brain works . . . . I feel better, I no longer feel like I'm on my deathbed, I can go bushhog 20 acres before lunchtime

So be a good girl and take your medicine, drink loads of fluids, get plenty of rest, and let everyone wait on you hand and foot! :)
Love,
Mary
