Since migraines - of one type or another seem to be a constant around here:mad:
I am wondering if many of you take medications for them? and how effective they are?
Just wondering....

While still in the hospital with my MVR I started on Imitrex which helped the headaches but the drug didn't meet with the approval of my cardiologist or PMD because of other heart issues. I was then put on a calcium channel blocker and that made me extremely short of breath. My neurologist later put me on nortriptyline which helps the migraines and is also beneficial for the neuropathy I have in my feet and legs. When I get a migraine it is associated with little if any headache but is visual and other sensory disturbances. I am seldom bothered by them on Nortriptyline 50mg each night.

I take Inderal with helps with my BP, heart irregularities and also migraines. Many people with migraines take Inderal. It doesn't help keep the auras away but it has lessened the severity of my headaches and, sometimes, I don't get a headache at all anymore. I used to get a headache with every aura.

Topamax

Topamax

I had migraines in my 20's but had not really had any for many years until surgery. My doctor put me on Topamax 15 mg daily, a anti-seizure med, to prevent them. Since starting the med, I have only had one migraine, so looks like it is working. The dose is quite low and I don't have any side effects from it and I am thankful for that.

Good luck! :)

I believe that Topomax works excellent for Migraines. My Doctor tried on me for my neurapothy but it didn't help. But I have seen and heard of great success for migraines.
