Well, It is definitely a different year in our family. My stepson and his new bride left last Sunday on their honeymoon to Tulum, Mexico (80 miles south of Cancun). Yesterday Christina was bitten by a monkey three times. These monkeys, although wild, apparently just hang out around the people. Anyway, she got attacked and bitten. She saw a doctor yesterday and today she took a tetanus shot. Tomorrow she's being sent to an english speaking hospital where she'll start rabies shots. She'll finish the round of shots after they return home (three shots total, with 2 to 3 days between shots). They had a wonderful time up to that point, but now the bride is crying. She get nausea easily and that's one of the expected side effects from the rabies shot. They fly home tomorrow. Say a little prayer for them if you think of it.

She's welcome to borrow my .357 Magnum and go back down to whoop a monkey's *ss. ;) That is a shame all the way around. Sometimes it pays to just stay home.

Oh My Heavens Wise.......

Prayers are being sent for your stepson's beautiful bride...I hope she gets to feeling better very soon. Harrybaby:D   :D

"Do you feel lucky?"

I'm thinking that Tulum just moved to #1 on my list of places in the world I have no desire to visit!

On the bright side, at least rabies shots aren't like they used to be . . .

Thanks for the offer, but it looks like we may not have to shoot the monkey after all. This particular monkey was someone's pet. It has been quarantined and is showing no signs of sickness. Christina got a prescription for rabies vaccine, but the vaccine isn't available there. Her mother, who is a nurse, has arranged for our hospital to administer the rabies vaccine shortly after she arrives home. Also, Christina is feeling fine, so it looks like it will all be okay.

Wise,
I hope this is a case of all's well that ends well.
It is a real shame that her honeymoon was marred by this incident, but you know it is a story that will be handed down from one generation to the next. Seventy five years from now, they will still be talking about it!

Oh my goodness, Wise... I'm speechless. Glad to hear it was someone's pet and not wild. I'm with Georgia on this one, scratch Tulum off my places to visit.

Poor kid, what a way to spend a honeymoon! I din't even know that there were monkeys in Mexico! And I used to live there (but in Mexico City...definitely none there!)

Hope the shots go easily for her. I have also heard that they are nothing at all like they used to be.

Who knows, maybe in 50 years it will be some type of luck that will generate good things for generations to come?

They said that monkeys are everywhere there in Tulum. They jump on carriages people are riding in and just hang out where the people are. They couldn't be too wild huh?

Wise,

My heart goes out to the new bride. I have had the experience of being bitten by a monkey, too. I was only about 2 or 3 years old, and my family was in a pet shop, shopping for a puppy. I tried to pet a caged monkey, and he decided to gnaw on my hand instead. There was no threat of rabies, but the bite did become very badly infected. If it hadn't been for the good old family pediatrician who made daily house calls, I might have lost the hand.

Obviously today in America we are able to be much more vigilant in watching for infection, and I'm sure your daughter in law will have great care, so please just let her know we're here for her. . .

Incredible! I hope all goes well with her. This will certainly be some story to tell the grandkids.

So glad to read it was not a wild monkey. They certainly will be telling this story for years to come. I got sun poisoning on my honeymoon in San Juan 41 years ago and Dick spent the night bringing me gingerale-probably responsible for some of the basal cells, I have had now in my later years!

Hey everyone, I'll have to share this thread with Christina. I think she may be cheered up by it. She'll like the part about this story being told to generations of her family. She is nuts about children. In fact, she teaches first grade this coming year at a private school in town. She previously taught at the catholic school, pre-school and third grade I believe. She's very good with kids and they love her too.

She'll appreciate your concern for her too. Thanks

I am so sorry this happened, especially on her honeymoom. But, just think of the expressions on the faces of her 1st. graders when she tells them the story. She'll be the hit of the whole school.
