I was watching TV last week and who came on was my cardiac surgeon advertising his abilities. I couldn't believe it. I don't think he needs the money but I found this really odd. I asked my Cardiologist what this was all about and he said that it was just there way of getting new business and that advertising does work. He is an excellent surgeon but I think they all have an ego problem because they are so good. I was really dumbfounded when I saw him talking about a procedure he could do and at what hospital. What do you all think?:D

I think it is just seems odd because it is so new. Professionals have been advertising for years and we have gotten used to lawyers, dentists, etc. Many people do not have access to good information via other methods so TV is a good way to get their attention.
Hospitals advertise, drug companies, and I have even heard plastic surgeon ads on radio so why not all the doctors? Might be a good way of getting the patients to the best doctors.

Personally, I've never gotten used to lawyers and dentists advertising. There is just something WRONG with it. The good lawyers [and there are some good ones, because I am married to one] don't have to advertise. Word of mouth brings in the business.

Our cardio groups advertise here, but never individuals. Doesn't seem nearly as tacky.

Our hospitals advertise here and show photos of various doctors. There is some kind of competition among the several hospitals and they are all trying to outdo the others. It's pretty aggressive advertising, with sometimes whole page photos of a few doctors, bigger than life. One of Joe's cardiologists was featured full page. Joe, the imp that he is, took full advantage of an opportunity to tease, Wasn't met with a very receptive attitude :p

Cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery seem to be the most often advertised thing.

personally I would not trustany MD or attorney that felt a need to advertise.
