    Edwards SAPIEN transcatheter heart valve

Wish you all the best with this breakthrough treatment, though I'm a little surprised that they are willing to do this considering your age. Anyway, I hope you'll get the best option for you. PS You don't need to worry about anti-coagulation. I take Marcoumar (i.e. Phenprocoumon) and do home...

    What kind of valve?

If these are your valve choices then you cannot make a wrong decision. It's a win-win situation. :)

    Coumadin dosage?

If and only if you are measuring a trend should you change your dose. Besides, your INR is still in range and take 0.2 as the measuring error, so your INR might just be 3.3. Perfect! My range is 2.5 - 3.5 and my INR was 4.1 the other day, but that's because I was travelling abroad making my INR...

tips for getting a good blood draw??

I had the same problem but solved it by cutting deeper into the finger until you get this burning sensation. Then you're deep enough and blood will flow easily. Just increase the depth of the CoaguChek Softclix by turning it.

    Home monitoring in Norway?

Hei Morten Just curious, what meds are you taking for your valve in Norway? Warfarin or Phenprocoumon?

    How often to check INR

In my opinion, testing ought to be done on a two week basis, unless you are very stable so that longer intervals can be considered as safe. When changing your dose you might wish to consider testing weekly until you have converged towards a stable INR associated with the new dose you are...

    coumadin and diet

Ross has made an excellent point. Now go and prepare some brussel sprouts and don't forget to put some nutmeg on top of them. Yummie :)

    Missed my dose

Warfarin has a half-life of approx. 2-3 days, so I'm not expecting a dramatic impact when you forget to take your dose for a day. Plasma levels won't drop that much since there's still significant levels of warfarin from previous days.

A Valve Replacement in my Future...

Hi Louise! I take my ONX for a run 2/3 times a week and swallow my warfarin pills with a smile on my face. No problems whatsoever. Call me crazy, but I'm having fun dosing myself with this stuff using a Coagucheck. By the way, home testing is beyond cool  Follow your heart and mind...

Valve Decision - Mechanical or Tissue

I just changed my post, because it occurs to me that choosing a valve should not be some contest. Just read as much material on the topic you can. Only you can make the decision.

    Bicuspid Aortic Valve Repair?

Oops, I now see that we are talking about regurgitation, not stenosis, which is of course a total different game.

    Bicuspid Aortic Valve Repair?

Admittedly, having your AV repaired sounds fantastic, but I think this sort of procedure is rare and may not yield optimal results. As others have noted, find yourself a darn skilled surgeon who knows what he's doing. He ought to be candid with you about possible failure and reoperation...

Valve Choice for 30 Yr. Old

Yes. Suppose the risk of a stroke is 1% per pt-year (assuming On-X) then the chance of an event free year is 99% per pt-year. Hence after 30 years 0.99^30 => 74%. Don't let warfarin scare you, it is a non-issue. Worry about your mortgage, not your mechanical valve and warfarin ;)

Mouthwash to Stop Bleeding After Dental Procedures

Here's another link on aminocaproic acid mouthwash with brand name Amicar. Should I stop my patient's warfarin prior to a dental procedure?

    Life expectancy

I don't believe in life expectancy. There are many things that could kill you. From too many donuts, to crossing the street to swapping a light bulb in your house. Each new dawn is a gift. Best wishes and happy holidays,

Joseph Pennell June 12th, 1931 to December 22,2006

My sincere condolences, Nancy. Despite Joe's heart condition, he reached a very respectable age of 75 years. He is an example to all of us, to never give in and to never give up, ever. Best wishes,

Just curious, but where is Andy these days? He used to come up with all sorts of news on valve surgery techniques.

    Stopping Coumadin For Oral Surgery

Update: I called my ACT clinic to ask about protocols regarding primary care dental procedures and INR. It turns out that they will NOT change my dose for INR <= 4.0 ! They too said that meddling with my dose wasn't worth the risk of a stroke and its lifelong repercussions.

    Stopping Coumadin For Oral Surgery

I hereby strongly object to stopping your warfarin for 4 days based on the following: Simon Carruthers, Chairman BDA Formulary Committee, responds "The issue of warfarin and primary care dental surgical procedures has been considered by the BDA's Dental Formulary Committee. It is the view of...

Frustrated - Stubborn High Blood Pressure

Besides hard work, do you relax enough? My personal favorite is the sauna, or a nice warm bath. This allows your veins to "widen" so that the BP can drop a little. I've noticed that my BP increases when I have cold feet and legs, hence the sauna and bath 'therapy'. Experiment with relaxation...
