Should I get button down shirts for post surgery?

I was able to slowly and gently pull on a sweater with help a week after surgery. So it depends on your patience and insistence. I tend to have favorite comfortable clothes and was eager to get back to them.

After having a valve replacement how often do you see your cardiologist?

I was told my case was unique. I had an echo Every 3 months for the first year and yearly after that.

How can a loved one best help someone with BAV in the waiting room?

I think just being there -- all the time. I think for many people this is not as big a thing as it was for me. We were high school sweet hearts and have been married 39 years and have rarely been apart. Just being there - at the appt's, in the hospital, after surgery, while I slept - made all...

I was the last one on Friday -- it was easier for my family to be there because of the weekend.

Three Weeks Out - Too Early to go to Work?

My surgeon said I could go back to work immediately provided that I had a recliner in my office so I could rest and sleep when tired. It worked great I had surgery on Friday and returned work on Thursday. I shut my door and slept and my secretary kept people away. And I didn't go stir crazy but...

    First meeting with surgeon

I'd ask questions about expected stay & if my wife is welcome in the ICU after surgery. Also does he answer email questions and can you use your blood. How does he feel about valve repair in your case.

I was told to stay inside if temperatures were below 40F and to avoid becoming chilled. I had my surgery in Feb and just put up with the restriction.

    Aortic Replacement Stories

I can only tell you my experience but it should be a place to start. I'm sure others have different experiences. I had surgery on Friday evening. Walked 1/2 mile on Saturday afternoon. Left the hospital on Tuesday (after a very minor glitch - I pass out regularly and have since I was a...

How long before you returmed to work fulltime?

Returned to work (as a professor) 5 days after surgery. But I slept 2-3 hours a day in my office for the first month. Probably I was real full time at about 6 weeks. I did 12 weeks of rehab but just worked around it.

    Reassurance please....

I think it was harder on my wife than on me. Take a deep breath, it will be better in after the second day. At least it was for my wife.

    Sex after surgery

I tried a few days after surgery and found that everything was working but my chest was too painful for the first month to be able to really want to it.

    Extreme Hot sweats/Cold Post-Op - HELP!

I had the same thing. The good news is the cold part only lasted a week or so. The sweats lasted several months and fully went away.

To anyone who had to "push" for an early surgery

Get a second opinion from someone outside your current cardio's practice. Also don't be too eager for surgery. It's a lot more trouble than you might think and there is always a chance that the outcome is will not be what you hoped for.

    Night sweats again!

I have night sweats periodically and my surgery was 4 years ago. Seems like they show up every month or so and then go away. Not as bad as right after surgery but I never had them before surgery.

    I'm being a moody cow

Waiting for surgery was tough for me. I was very afraid my life would have to change. Everyone had a scary story to share. But in the end it was okay ... it was just a rocky road for a couple of months. It'll likely be the same for you. But the pre surgery jitters are tough.
