New member asks "when to do it?"

Hello ChouDoufu, I am from Malaysia. I had an AVR (St. Jude Mechanical) done in February 2008 at our Heart Institute here in Kuala Lumpur. Mine was detected in 1998. I was under monitoring & the doctor said my heart is getting enlarged & recommended surgery. I had no symptoms. Thanks

anticoagulation and travel to foreign and developing countries

I just had an AVR at the Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in February 2008. There is no problem in testing your INR in Malaysia. Most government clinics/hospitals will do it. The problem may be the food. I think you should eat food serve in fast food outlets, clean restrautrants...

    A Stigma with Health Ailments?

I was really scared before my AVR surgery. I waited about 3 months for my surgery. I prayed & when almost time for the surgery I prayed a lot. My family, relatives & friends also prayed for me & that was very comforting. Thanks:)

    Managing Anti-Coagulation Therapy While Overseas

When I visit the US I will be staying at San Jose, California. Hopefully I can contact a vr.com member nearby to recommend a good doctor. My surgeon is Dr. Pau Kiew Kong & he is trained in Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA. In fact most of our surgeons at our Heart Institute are trained either...

    Managing Anti-Coagulation Therapy While Overseas

My INR today was 2.8 (2.5-3.0). The hospital does not prearrange for INR testing for me when going overseas. I have to arrange it myself. Thanks:)

John & Joann, Glad to know you have traveled much & testing is OK for you. Have you thought of travelling to Asia?:) Thanks:)

    Managing Coumadin While Traveling

Maybe it is the food that we consumed when overseas that produced very high or low INR. Off course it is impossible to take the food along that we eat regularly back home which produce consistent within range INR. Therefore in my opinion people on ACT who are traveling domestically/overseas...

    Managing Coumadin While Traveling

Hi Freddie, It has been 10 weeks since my AVR. I am still not stable yet. Testing is once 2-weekly & if dose change weekly. Out of 9 tests so far, I was in range twice only. I have a friend who has the same type of surgery done in 1999 & is now on quarterly testing. I hope to get into...

    Managing Coumadin While Traveling

Jkm7, I was wondering also how people managed their ACT while traveling domestically or overseas. I foresee problems when traveling for months especially overseas. Your INR is stable domestically but when overseas & when you are in Asia where the food intake is different, then it looks like...

I am not sure I am able to buy my own machine here. Testing is all done in the hosptials. Maybe I can purchase one from overseas, US or Europe. Thanks :)
