Complexities of replacing/preserving Ascending Aorta in BAVD

That's interesting Michelle and good to hear your story. Sounds like they wanted to take the preservation route with you also. Hope you are recovering well after surgery :)

    BAV hereditary?

Seems there is so much still unknown around the whole genetics of BAV. I was diagnosed at 23 with BAV and have had two subsequent AVRs at 23 & 30. Aortic Aneurysm also. On my fathers side, my grandmother (80) and two Aunts (40&60) both died of Brain Aneurysms. I have two cousins on same side...

Complexities of replacing/preserving Ascending Aorta in BAVD

:)It's been a long time since I've posted on here but a private message I received prompted me to come on to catch up and share my journey! Diagnosed in 2001 with BAV, I had my Aortic Valve replaced with homograph in February that year. Ascending Aorta was 3.8cm at the time so that wasn't...

    Basketball?

Contact sport is a real grey area, for do's and don'ts. And unfortunately no-one is going to give you the answer you want to hear - or perhaps the one you don't want to hear either. I play 5-aside Soccer, sometimes recreational 11 aside soccer, and more recently went back to finish off the...

    TV Documentary on AVR Surgery

I had'nt a clue this thread was happening in my absence!! Hopefully Deano's suggestion might work for some of you. Gian Franco is a star- no doubt- he's kept me on the planet on two seperate occasions! ;) Interestingly he was interviewed minutes prior to the operation, and said something to...

    Having your Surgery Filmed

It will definitely be surreal watching the surgery part  The only part that I had a problem with was when I had just come out of Intensive Care into HDU. I could hardly breathe never mind speak - so next thing this camera is stuck in my face asking me how I am feeling now?! :( After about...

    Having your Surgery Filmed

Hey folks, It's been a long time since I've posted :o Been really busy between a new business, work and wedding plans. The documentary is being screened on BBC1 Northern ireland this Monday Night at 9pm. It is called 'Super Docs', and will last one hour. Not sure whether or not, i'll be able...

    Wisdom teeth in or out?

Thanks for the all the feed back folks :) Interesting to hear the contrasting stories of so many wise men/women :D It's just a judgment call I suppose. Mines are the lowers and any irritation is extremely mild, but How would you know if it was bordering on infection that could effect the valve...

    Wisdom teeth in or out?

Hi Folks. Feel a bit guilty, as I haven't been posting in ages. :o But I will try harder :) Nearly a year post-op with AVR (mechanical). Had a little irritation around my wisdom teeth on my left side (right side were taking out after jaw break), last week. So I organised an appointment to see...

    How often to test?

I also home-test. Once a week if I'm in range. Every 3 days if my INR is too high/too low.

How quick can exercise effect INR???

I home test and adjust my own dosage. I had been taking 10mg M,W,T,F,S and 9mg T,S. Last week my INR was 2.0 (range 2-2.5), so I increased my dosage to 10mg everyday. Then on Tuesday I went for a 5km run (hadn't done in a while) :D Had been out golfing on Monday night and coaching on Tue night...

How quick can exercise effect INR???

Hi Folks. Just a quick question. Is it possible that after a good workout during the day, then that same evening, your INR could be lower as a result? I understand the effects of exercise on INR, but had wondered if the effect was instantaneous or not. Just trying to understand what might...

    Aneurysm and Stress Tests

Fair enough. If he's proposing that it's ok for you to continue WT, then it doesn't sound like he is a very informed Cardio

    Aneurysm and Stress Tests

That's one way of looking at it, as long as you continue with a very non-exertive lifestyle until you have your aorta fixed/repaired. I'm not sure what you intend to do in regard to the whole exercise thing. If you intend to continue at a fairly active level, then perhaps the stress test would...

    Aneurysm and Stress Tests

I had 3 different stress tests when my ascending aorta was 4.5cm in size - prior to my AVR + ascending aorta re-inforcement in December. The object was to test how high my BP rose during peak exercise, so we could assess the risks, given the dilated aorta. I completed 18 minutes on two of the...
