    Morning vs. evening anti-coagulation dose

I take mine with lunch around noon. Don't think it really matters as long as you remember to take them every day. I have other pills in the morning and evening...so I take the warfarin and lipitor at noon.

Mechanical Valve type that Fits you

My surgery was a number of years ago...but I was not offered any choice of valve. St. Jude's is what they used and were comfortable with. If I wanted something different I would have to go elsewhere. The valve has been working well for nearly 14 years.

Yikes! Aortic valve leaking after surgery. Anyone else?

I had some leakage right from the start...but not significant. About 3 years after surgery...the leaking became more significant and it looked like I was headed for a re-op. However...subsequent echos over the next several years showed the leak diminishing again to acceptable levels. I am now...

    Costs and other Basics?

I have never home tested but go to the lab at the Dr. office once a month. Take generic warfarin. Have not had any problems in the 10+ years I have taken it. It has been a total non-issue.

    10 year anniversary

It was ten years ago this week that I had my aortic valve replaced with a St Judes mechanical valve. The time has gone fast and the 10 years have been mainly uneventful. Still have leakage around the suture line in the mild to moderate category that may require a second surgery one day...

Are all of you men with mechanical valves using electric razors?

Still use a blade for shaving. Get a nick once in a while...but it has never caused any bleeding issues. Actually...have never had any bleeding issues in the 10+ years I've been on warfarin. It is pretty much a non-issue for me.

    Mechanical Heart Valve leaking

Had AVR with St. Jude mechanical in 2003. About 4 years in...quite a bit of leakage developed along the suture line. It looked like I was headed for another surgery. However...the leakage stayed about the same...and over a period of years the leakage has gradually diminished. So...now 9...

Treatable complications - how frequent ?

I agree with Steve. I had a very rapid and uncomplicated recovery. I was home in 6 days...started rehab a week later. Started driving again at 3 weeks...and went back to work in 6 weeks. There was occasional pain and discomfort the first few weeks...but nothing requiring any special visits...

My Son's Broken Heart - What Is The Best Choice?

It's difficult to know what to do. I was in a similar situation as a young child...I had aortic coarctation repaired when I was 10 years old. I was told I would probably need aortic valve replacement in a few years. However...I stayed in good health for many years and did not need to have my...

    Leaking Valve at Ring

Hope you get good news. I developed fairly significant leaking at the suture line about 4 years after my surgery. It appeared I was headed for another surgery. Fortunately, over the last 4 years the leaking has decreased quite a bit...so things are good again. I never had any symptoms during...

    7th Anniversary

My St. Jude aortic valve is 7 years old today. I was fortunate to have an uneventful surgery and recovery. And so far...no problems with coumadin. I have some leakage with the sutures...which got fairly serious a couple years ago. However...this has partly closed up again. So...I am hoping any...
