I got my ICD Feb. 27, 2008 and for the past nine months we've lived in perfect harmony. I don't bother it and it doesn't bother me. Until Monday when it decided to shock me. I had just woken up from a nap when I could feel my heart racing and then slowing down, racing, slowing down, racing, and then BAM!

So my cardio told me to go to the ER by my apartment (my cardio's in DC, I go to school in Harrisonburg, VA) to get my ICD interrogated. It was SVT and my cardio said to come in on Friday, since I wasn't done with finals until Wed, which is today.

That was all fine and good until an hour ago when I got shocked again. This time I was standing up and the shock was so powerful that I almost fell back against the wall. So now instead of driving home, which I love because I get two hours to myself listening to my music and looking at the mountains, I have to wait for my parents to come pick me up and take me straight to Children's.

So now I'm just kind of pissed off. Because I'm probably going to be admitted, because it's December. My heart always breaks down in December. I'm really glad that I was able to finish the semester without being hospitalized (the first time in three semesters!) but if I spend another birthday in the hospital (Dec. 22) I'll kill someone. :)

You poor baby. I sure hope that they can take care of the problem without keeping you there til your birthday! I can't offer any solutions, but I am praying that it is an easy fix and you are out of there lickety split!

I am so sorry, and I too hope this can be fixed quickly for you.

And believe me, I know what it is to have a few hours to yourself and be able to enjoy the mountains (and music too, for that matter). So I hope you are back to that very soon.

Oh, man that really stinks, and I feel for you, but I'm glad you are relatively ok. Thank god for the durned ICD. And good decision not to drive!

I had a pacemaker the first 15 months after OHS, then on 12/21/07 went into vtach on my way to work. Fortunately the heart went back into rhythm by itself before I totally passed out, and I didn't wreck the car (it was a close call), but I wound up in the hospital, of course, being "introduced" to more medication.

My friends brought the Xmas party to my room (Santa hats and all). I had my pacemaker replaced with an ICD on Christmas eve, and finally got home Xmas afternoon. Merry Flippin Christmas! New Year's wasn't a lot of fun, either, as I was still very sore.

Holidays in the hospital suck.

That sucks, for sure. Mine ruined a perfectly good 4th of July this year. I hope you find the cause and feel better very soon. Try and feel grateful to have this "friend" looking out for you.
take care

I sure hope you're home well before Christmas. But I'm glad you have the ICD!!!

Thanks to everyone for replying to my rant. Now I feel kind of stupid.

I went home and went to Children's to see my cardio and have them check my ICD again after the second shock. It turns out that I didn't go into v-tach, my heart was actually conducting on it's own for the first time in 5 years. My heart was able to beat outside of the range that they had set on my ICD. So now they've re-set the minimum and maximums of my pacemaker so I won't get paced unless I go below 40 (instead of 60) and I won't get shocked unless I go to 200 (instead of 160).
They don't know why it happened or how it happened, but they said that it would probably go away, especially if I got the flu or a cold. Still, I can't believe something good happened in December.
I got a Christmas miracle instead of a Christmas crisis! Yay!

I am so happy for you. Christmas miracles are great. Enjoy your Christmas and your birthday,(mine is Dec. 15) but I am way older than you.
