I received the results from my MRI yesterday and have an appointment with the orthopaedist today. I was told I have a tear in a disc. Woohoo, how exciting.

sigh - scheduled the appointment for the afternoon and I am going for a 5 hour ride in the morning.

Glad you went ahead with the MRI. Knowledge is power. And, of course, it is knowledge that you can disregard if you choose to!! But like everything we've all gone through here, knowing what things can happen to us is empowering. Even if we flagrantly disregard the warnings, we can choose that and allow ourselves some semblance of control over the things we seem to have no control over.

Hoping the orthopedist has some creative ideas for you.

Best wishes.

Marguerite

I'm surprised your moving around at all. My sons baseball coach had one and that man was in such deep pain that all he could do was lay flat on his back and not move.

I can't improve on Marguerite's answer!:)
I'll just wait for the next chapter in the biker vs the medical community saga.;)

you really are going on a five hour ride? well, we'll be here when you get home. Have fun - we're leavin the light on for you if you need us..........

Sorry to hear this news and hoping the specialist has some much better news and/or options for you.

I used to bike over 1,000 miles a year, and I do have a great appreciation for how biking adds to your life. I cannot imagine how ou can bike with a torn disc. I used to have little time for advice from the old guys-and I still trust what my body tells me as much or more than what my Dr. tells me-BUT- As I have gotten older, I have discovered that your body has a way of remembering what you did to it-and things you thought you got away with can come knocking at your door a few years down the line. So, please be careful.

Ouch David...you have good reason to whinge about that...Hopefully it will settle down after a bit of rest and you will be back to almost normal and riding as much as you desire.

I have many worn out and herniated discs in my Lumbar spine (only 1 good one left actually). That initial pain goes away after a few weeks to be replaced by a general ache that usually responds to Dencorub or similar. With your piggy-valve you may still qualify for a shot into your spine...They are uncomfortable but do wonders for the pain and aid helaing.

All the best.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the concern. I apologize for the slow response, once the weekend hits I have no opportunity to get online.

Met with the doc and got all the good and bad news.

Good news first - I can keep riding. :D

Bad news - I have to stop running for a while.

What was found? Here is what I remember - the disc between L4 and L5 is torn, according to the doc it is an odd spot and I should be experiencing significant pain in both legs and lower back. Fortunately I only have pain in the left leg and it is not bad, more annoying then really painful. The doc didn't seem to enjoy my reply when he asked me how I would rate the pain on a scale of one to ten and I said two and three sixteenths.

I also have arthritis and a 20% loss of strength in the left leg. Not really sure how he could determine that but whatever. He said it wouldn't heal and since it isn't causing me too much discomfort we will do therapy for now. He will discuss other options if needed in 30 days.

well, at least you know the picture now and can make good decisions about what you can/can't do. Glad you can still ride because it's so important to you and we hate to give up inportants, don't we? Hoping your therapy brings you back up to par and the arthritis eases on down.

That actually sounds pretty good...Don't you just love being told you have Arthritis in your spine ...I can't remember if you have/had a BAV but I have seen it mentioned that it is common amongst BAV'ers. I thought Arthritis was for the elderly population.

I hope you get to do some Hydrotherapy. It was really good for my back and fun too.

Glad to hear you can still pedal!

Mntbiker,

Love the good news -- that you can still bike.

As for not so good, therapy often can do a lot of good. I know when I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis 4 years ago, we went with physical therapy (aqua and then gym) and it largely cleared up the back problem.

Mtnbiker,
Good luck managing your lower back. In the past, I have had some L4-5 problems with some leg tightness. Try to lay on the floor and bring your knees to your chest.. ask your doctor for some lower back stretching exercises. Also, it helps a lot to lay on your back with one or two pillows under your knees to help relieve pressure on your lower back. In any case, check with your doc or a physcial therapist as needed. Glad you can still ride and enjoy the bike! Keep your spirits up!
