Hi everyone. I've been totally encouraged by your forum. Been lurking for a few months now - I've been waiting for a valve sparing/replacement since December 2007 and it's been driving me nuts.
But things have changed! After many haranguing phone calls, letters and emails I have finally obtained a DATE! Well chuffed. The Royal Brompton in London, Prof Pepper. Friday July 18th (admitted Weds 16th). Which seems like a while away until you reckon on 7 days of work, 12 off and then I'm in!

Argh.

So..
I am 33, live in Scotland with my lovely wife and 2 v young kids. Great fun. I am a forensic biologist for the police which rocks. Am a Christian which is even better. I'm into the outdoors, esp mountain biking - was in Morzine in the French Alps last summer with bikes - fantastic. I might have done less if I'd known what I do now.

Medically..
Brain haemorrhage during Harry Potter at the cinema in Dec 2005, woke up 3 days later in a neurosurgical ward, took a few months to get over, no ill effects. Whilst there they did an echo, amongst other things, and found my aortic root was dilated. And then asked for a repeat echo after 6 mths and told me not to worry about it. I didn't worry about it. Neither did they.
They forgot about it. Got the repeat echo July 2007, and the result not till 2 years on in Dec 2007. It was now 6cm. They forgot to tell me but it needed operated on. Now. Urgently. First thing in the New Year. I wanted a 2nd opinion from a specialist so went to Prof Pepper at the Royal Brompton in Jan 2008. He was up for trying a valve-sparing, with the option of a replacement if it all goes pear shaped. It has taken these 6 months to get a date.
Phew!
Bit of an insight into the UK system. No-one's fault, you just get lost and there's big Queue's.

Genetics results have put me into a Marfan's Type II/Familial Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm/Loeys Dietz bracket, even though there is nothing else wrong and I have no symptoms! Strange feeling. Guess it won't be quite so unreal after the op.

So, again, THANKS.. I have found this site a lifesaver during the quiet moments, afraid, and I wonder just how on earth (or elsewhere) I am going to do this.

My total respect to you all.

Welcome Bongodan! I'm glad you found us. That's a whoppin' aneurysm you have there at 6 cm. Are you a big guy? Regardless - I'm glad your surgery is close.

Hi Bongodan and welcome. Nice to come in out of the shadows huh?

You've been reading, so you know most of what you need to know, but what specifically can we help you with?

Hi Ross!

A cyber-shoulder?!

I've been weighing up the valve-sparing/replacement thing for a good many months.. came to the decision that I really haven't a clue what's best, and to put my trust in a specialist.
To be honest, it's the putting-my-trust(life)-in-someone-else's-hands-bit that promises to be interesting!

For me, to see that others have been there and done that.. is a tremendous help. Roll on July 18th!

I placed you on the calendar for July 18th so now it is official. We will be here to help you through this and wish you the best.

Happy you introduced yourself. Nice to meet you! :) Interesting work you do.

It's good you found us before your surgery so we can help you over the mountain, as we call it.

You're young and active and should do fine.

I agree you should be discussing your choice of valve in the event replacement becomes necessary. Don't leave it to the surgeon to decide that on his own with you under anesthesia. You need to let him know your choice in case he cannot do a repair.

Good Luck. You'll do fine!

best of luck

best of luck

Finally i see someone that is scheduled after me.I thought july 9 would never come but it's almost here. Now i will be over the mountain to help all these other wonderful folks usher you over.
You should read, ask and read more about valve choice. I perhaps should have done more but I am happy with what I told my doctor i wanted. (ON-X) I just hope he doesn't find out when he's in there that it can't happen for some silly reason.
Good luck on the 18th and i'll be waiting for you.

Welcome to this community. You are young and the odds are overwhelming in favor of a wonderful outcome. My husband is 6 years older than you. He had no symptoms like you. He underwent surgery three weeks ago and he is doing well so far, exercise 30 minutes on stepper and treadmill daily now, you will be fine, too. We have two young kids too. I did cried a lot before surgery, but as many people here said, the hardest part is the wait. Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

hi y'all

totally overwhelmed by your response. nice one.

I know nothing about valve choice so had best read up on it!
It's a big area - but is there an obvious choice that just jumps out?

best wishes
