Hello again!
Among all the thoughts and questions running through my head, some being serious and some not so serious,..here is one that I keep wondering about.. How long after the surgery can you comfortably wear a bra?:)

Women of a "certain size" will need to wear a bra right after OHS.
Without one, it would be most painful and hinder the correct healing of the incision.
Try to find some with cotton type material covering the elastic to avoid irritation.
If you click on the Search feature and type in "Bra" you will find many posts.

My first OHS, I didn't wear a bra the first week. Second week home, I wore my regular underwire and developed an infection at the bottom of my incision (it rubbed against the incision) the first day I put on a bra. I had been told I should try to find something to wear as scar may heal thicker or keloid if the 'girls' weren't supported. I got some very lightweight sports type bras and they were fabulous. I held onto them to use for air travel as they have no hooks (metal that can set off the beepers at the airport). Glad I still had them as they were wonderful for my second OHS. Soft and comfortable and I brought one with me to the hospital to wear home. I just stopped wearing them a few weeks ago at week 6 when my scar seemed to be fully healed.

Very comfortable pull on style.....no hooks, all lightweight stretch.

They used to come in many colors but only white, black and rosewood (pink) now.

I'm not overly endowed, but didn't exactly feel comfortable going out with nothing covering the girls. So I wore camisoles with shelf bras. I would step into them rather than pull them on over my head. This worked great after my ICD surgeries when I couldn't lift my arm above a certain point.

Even to this day I can't stand to wear anything with underwire. It irritates my scar. Luckily I'm able to get away with that.

Oh boy, I am going through that right now. I feel I have to wear a bra other wise it feels as though the breasts are pulling on the incision. Yet after a while I can't wait to take my bra off. I am large chested and really did not find a sports bra that I liked or could pull over my head. So finally I found one of my larger ones and took the underwire out and that seems to work for now. I can't wait until this itching and numb feeling is over. It is my biggest complaint. So if that is the case I am lucky.

I didn't wear a bra at all in the hospital, obviously, and probably didn't for the first 3 days or so at home. But then I had to go to the Dr. and didn't want to scare anyone so I put on my regular underwire bra and it hasn't bothered me at all. I also have one of my drainage tube scars right where the underwire hits, but it hasn't bothered it.

Good question! I cant even remember what I did the first time around when I was 20. Now after having kids, etc, I hate to think of going without for too long...But it will likely be the least of our post op worries! As for comfort, I am all for the sport bra, or camisole with shelf bra that can be stepped into. Good luck!

I found those light-weight stretchy bralettes good enough for my needs. Not quite as sturdy as a sports bra. The one I got is soft and seamless and doesn't have a thick firm band of elastic around the under-bust area. It held me in enough so the 'girls' didnt wobble too much, actually its very much like a sleep-bra. Maybe try looking in the teen girls lingere section for some soft options. The tank-tops with built-in shelf bras were also fabulous

Whatever you use, it needs to not be tight acoss the sternum. So do some test runs and you should be fine. Going without is best but, if that will not work for you, just make sure you have soft material and no underwire.

Cami"s with the shelf bra were the best for me for the first several weeks after surgery. After a month or so I started wearing my normal bra but by the middle of the day I could'nt wait to get it off, it just made me too sore. I've mostly been wearing sports bra's they are the most comfortable. Good luck Debbie
