Ann in Ga.

My fiancee has been home from valve replacement surgery for almost three days. I know that he has been through major surgery but I don't want to dismiss anything as normal without a little guidance. He has been sleeping most of the time and seems to be getting out of breath quicker than when in the hospital. Last night I went to run a quick errand, called to check on him and he was so breathless he could barely talk. He says he's fine.

You need to call his dr and get him in. He may have fluid around the heart and lungs.

Ditto the above! While sleep a lot is quite normal post-op, being out of breadth, and barely able to talk, could be a symptom of fluid build-up. Has he been weighing himself daily to see if there's any significant weight gain in a short period of time? Even if there hasn't been, I'd get it checked out ASAP. Better to be safe than sorry. Best wishes that this ends up to be nothing to worry about.

Ditto to the above. Shortness of breath after surgery is a worrisome sign.

Also, I recommend getting a scale and one of the home blood pressure machines and EVERY DAY taking weight and blood pressure and pulse measurements. Take all the readings the same time every day. For BP, sit quietly for 4 minutes (using a watch) then measure it. Record them so you have a consistent history to show your doctor.

Welcome, Ann- glad you found us! You definitely should call the cardio or surgeon and weighing him every day is good advice- excess fluid will cause a weight gain. I think I remember that thay said any weight gain of over 1lb in a day should be reported.

Ann, call the doctor.

I had a similar course. A few days after returning home from my July 6 surgery, I couldn't breath well when laying down and it was harder to walk than it had been in the hospital. My local doctor stuck me in the local hospital because I had a lot of fluid build up. Over 5 days, I dropped around 20 pounds of fluid weight and got back to a bit under my pre-surgery weight.

The most wonderful thngs are that I can sleep in the bed now and I can walk without any shortness of breath.

Get it checked out. It isn't unusual but it isn't part of a good recovery, either.

I developed post-op A-fib/A-flutter and I could barely get my breath either. You're right to be concerned. Post-op complications of some nature seem to be fairly common, from what I've seen over the past four years on this site. Let us know how it goes please?

Anne,

Call the doctor. I had fluid develop post op and it knocks the wind right out of you (pup intended). This is not something to fool around with. They gave me some meds and a peeing I went, and all was fine.

Good luck with the patient.:D

Thanks everybody! He has been unbelievably better today. He took only one nap and was breathing much better. He weighed and had lost 6 lbs in a day and a half. We will be writing down his weight every morning now! We put a call in to the doctor but he had not heard back from them before I left to check on my house and my children. They are being real troupers about helping me out and tolerating a greatly reduced amount of time with mom. I have also learned a huge lesson....I don't have to wait for his 'permission' to call the doctor. ;)

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear he is feeling better.

After my surgery, I didn't know what to expect (I hadn't found VR.com yet) as I had never had any kind of surgery, let alone OHS, so really didn't know what was considered "normal" during recovery. Anyway, in week 3 I was feeling kind of run down but thought it was probably normal. I just happen to mention this to the doctors office during the call for my coumadin dosage and she suggested I come in. Next thing I know I was rushed to the hospital to get fluid drained it was so severe. My Surgeon gave me heck for not calling when I first started feeling poorly. His words...."For the next 6 months, if in doubt...call! There's no such thing as bothering us with a question."

Let us know how it goes. Best wishes to both of you.

Ann:

Losing 6 pounds in 36 hours is a helluvalot to lose. Are you sure the scales are accurate (i.e., are they new)?

How old is your fiance? Did he have symptoms pre-op? Was he in good physical shape/condition before surgery?
I was not -- my heart was enlarged, I had congestive heart failure, extreme fatigue, etc., and I felt crummy all the time. Post-op, I still had shortness of breath, fatigue, etc. I also lost 24 pounds in 1 month.
It took me much longer to recover than it should have.

Three years ago, another member here had problems post-op. She had AVR at same hospital, same surgeon as me. I had visited her in the hospital. Two to three weeks later, her sister called me to say XM had no appetite, was fatigued, short of breath. I said I had the same post-op, but suggested she call XM's cardio or the surgeon.
Within 30 minutes, she called back and said they were told to go to the hospital. She spent 3 days in the hospital because of fluid around the lungs. They drained off 1,000ml off fluid -- the contents of one of those bags you see hanging in hospital rooms.

When in doubt, call the doctors.
If they don't seem overly concerned and yet your fiance still feels crummy and has problems breathing -- go to the ER! Better to "waste" an ER co-pay than to ignore the beginnings of a serious situation.

Y?all ladies MUST remember thet us fellas don?t take too kindly t'them Docs. We sometimes (read ALWAYS) hafta be swif' kicked t'thet Doc o' ER. ?It?ll pass?, ?it ain?t bleedin' thet bad?, ?they?ll jess gimme two aspirin an' send me home?, ?I?m jess gonna take a nap? MUST be igno'ed at all costs.

Th' HANDS ON THE HIPS usually gits mah attenshun real fast! A grab t'th' ear (o' other extendable body part) will usually git us movin'. Also, nothin' like a size eight t'th' South ind when I?m facin' No'th t'git me movin?.

Soun's like he might be takin' a turn fo' th' better by now. But a call t'th' Doc won't hurt.

Bubba :)

Ann Just because he is feeling better today and lost 6 lbs is not a reason to not get him in. He may have lost 6 but will get it back when he takes liquid. He may have over a dozen lbs of fluid so he is not done yet. Do not wait for the dr to call back just call the receptionist and tell her he needs to be seen today do not take the to busy for an answer. Fluid that compromises his talking is a concern. I also want to make sure he is on enough potassium. Get him in and ease my mind on this.

6 pounds is nothing. I lost right at 20 pounds in 5 days on the water pills when they stuck me back in the local hospital. Since then, it has been going great.
