Just thought I'd post a note...this Sunday is the Utica Boilermaker 15k. It is the largest 15k in the country, and very well run. Entry was closed at 12000 runners. Spectators the entire course, lots of support. My first real race post op, so it should be fun!

That's a great accomplishment for 6 months post-op. Let us know how it goes.

Boilermaker

After living in upstate NY many years, I know what a boilermaker is but many folks probably do not. A boilermaker is a "shot and a beer". The way its done is to first drink a little bit out of the beer glass, then drop the whole shot glass (filled with whiskey) into the beer glass, and then chug the whole glass of beer, including the shot of whiskey. At least that's the way I was taught. I'd recommend you pass on the boilermaker after the race, but strongly recommend that you enjoy a cold beer to celebrate what will undoubtedly be a personal milestone and glorious accomplishment for you. Good luck!

Well being in Indiana, I thought your Boilermaker title was in reference to the Purdue Boilermakers. Oh well!

I am a runner as well and SO looking forward to my first race. Still a ways to go for me.

GOOD LUCK!

Lisa

The name has a twofold derivation. The race begins at a boiler factory, Utica Boilers, and ends at the FX Matt brewery. They were the two biggest employers in Utica back in the day. Maybe still are. The boilermaker drink was no doubt a favorite of the factory workers.

Well, it's probably finished already, so lets wait a bit and see how he made out. The results should be posted by late tonight or tomorrow.

Tom -

Let us know how you did!!! We know some people that ran this year and I was just telling my husband that maybe next year I would do the 5 k!:)

Finished!

Finished!

Well, it was hot and humid. After the first mile (9:30), I could tell it was going to be a long race. I decided to fall back to plan B, run 6 minutes and walk one minute. That worked for the first 10k...but I have to say the walks got longer the last 5k. Final time: 1:48:35 for 9.3 miles. There were many faster runners laying on the side of the roads getting medical attention (I will take a 2 minute credit as I helped a women at mile 7 who was about to collapse)!
Oh, and my shirt read: New Aortic Valve, 1/25/07: $75,000...back running the Boilermaker...Priceless! I had many comments from runners congratulating me on the accomplishment...

Still a great race and a great party afterwards (free Saranac beer!)..

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Tom - As I am recovering in the cool of my air conditioned home, I applaud your finish!!! LOVE the t-shirt! Would love a Saranac!:)

Great run Tom. I know it may not seem so great compared to prior years but thinking about where you're coming from it is. Congratulations.:D

I would collapse at the very thought of running 15K in July and I'm 16 years post-op. Meanwhile, there was a little 5K fun run nearer to me (Utica is 2 hours away) and the weather was not too hot for a short race. Quite nice actually.

I always wear an Achilles Track Club t-shirt to races. Rather than advertise my own health history, I'd rather give a tip of the hat to all disabled athletes. Look it up on line: <http://www.achillestrackclub.org/>. Everyone on this forum is probably qualified to join Achilles. It's mostly New York runners and they tend to focus more on the NYC marathon than anything else, but there are local chapters with members worldwide. If you think you're something special running a road race after heart surgery, check out the background of some of those people and you'll be humbled.

Tom is famous!

Tom is famous!

My husband's boss said to my husband "Tell your wife I saw a guy at the Boilmaker with a great t-shirt!" I had told my husband yesterday about Tom's t-shirt! Small world - isn't it! So Tom - you were definitely noticed!

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for hte support! Caroline...I wan't sure about the t shirt at first, but then I thought if I could help someone watching get back into shape, then it was worth it. The added congrats from runners as we passed was great!
