My wife and I are home from a 10-day roundtrip driving vacation from Florida to Syracuse, NY to visit our son. We spent a lot of time on the road -- logged in excess of 3,200 miles and had a wonderful time. I had no heart-related problems or even any fatigue on the trip. For the benefit of those of you in the waiting room, be positive. When we started the trip, I was 3 1/2 months post-op. It can be done!
I feel strong, happy, and healthy. The only remaining problem is with the annoying sterile abscesses that pop up along my incision scar. They grow in size and then pop open, oozing a clear fluid until the skin heals again. We have had cultures done, and it is not an infection. They used to happen once a week, and the heart surgeon would dig out subcutaneous suture knots every time. Now it is more like every 2-3 weeks, and the doctors are no longer worried about it. Eventually they expect it to stop, when my body gives up on rejecting these subcutaneous sutures. Of course, they said I can call and talk to them anytime if the situation changes.
We had such a good time that we are now planning another 10-day driving adventure out to see our daughter in San Antonio later this month.
Life is good again!
