Hello to all of you- to whom your vast knowledge collectively has kept me informed throughout Scott's ordeal. I thank you !!! This all happened so suddenly - even though I knew he had issues from birth- he was fine until the end of April. That is when the situation became immediate. I again need some input on what to discuss with Dr. Colvin post operatively. I do want to know exactly what he did, what he saw, what type of valve he chose, I know it was bovine, and calcification risks. We go into his office tomo afternoon. Please let me know the questions I should ask. Again- God Bless You ALL. You are the finest group of people I have ever been involved with.

You've pretty much summed it up yourself. There really isn't anything more I can add. Be sure to snag the records. ;)

As Ross mentioned, get copies of his records. One of those is the surgery report. This is the official report of what was done during the surgery. The surgeon's office may not have it - you may need to request it from the medical records dept of the hospital.

Best wishes,
Arlyss

I would ask what, if any restrictions he has going forward. How often does he need to check weight or BP? What are symptoms of calcification of the valve? How often will you see the cardiologist? What kind of tests will they do to check for calcification and other aneurysms.

Good luck with the appt. I hope Scott is feeling better.

Do you know yet the results of the possible Marfan's diagnosis? You might want to get names of any specialists or resources he may recommend related to that issue.

And about the surgical record: Before my AVR, I was asked for a copy of my surgery OR record from a heart surgery I had when I was 17. I didn't have it. But they wanted it. Surprised me. It's important you get a copy.

I second.........

I second.........

the restrictions (driving, riding, work, activity, etc.) and the report, although the official one may not even be typed up yet, depending on the surgical volume of the center, but stay on top of that one. Be sure to review all meds that he is on with the doc. How long will he be on each one (hopefully, if he is still on diuretics you can stop those at some point in the future, although now may be too soon). Do you need any refills of anything? You can always get that called in, but it's so much easier to get them while you are there. Does he need cardiac rehab? If that would be beneficial, then how is that set up?

Be sure to discuss the pain and depression issues!!!! This will not be a first for him and he may be able to offer some great advice, etc. Oh, and get a copy of today's visit (sats, pressures, etc.) for future comparison purposes.

I hope you have a good checkup. Hugs. J.
