Hi ,

I went for my pre-op yesterday and got to know that my blood pressure is running very low, it was 99/47. Was wondering if it was because of the valve. Is it normal to have a low B.P with aotic stenosis? My doctor dint say anything about it so I am assuming it is not a huge problem for my surgery or otherwise. My mom got worried when I told her about it. What do guys think?

Thanks,
Swati

I highly doubt the valve has anything to do with it. There are so many things that control blood pressure, that it's impossible for me to even begin to say. It's low, that's for sure, but obviously not enough to alarm the Doc in anyway.

swati,
I have a bicuspid aortic valve, with regurgitation, I also have spells with low BP's last weekend I wasnt feeling good after work (light headded, spacy, weak, heart palps) and checked my BP it was 85/54! I have had 2 or 3 more of these with BPs in the 90s/50s this week. while 99/47 is low, its not that low.....100/60 or 70 is the cutoff I think. it may have been a 1 time thing, blood pressure changes every second of your life, it may have just been one of those things..... if your doc wasnt concerned, I wouldnt be.

RE the other post you posted:

another thought: dehydration can cause low BP! is it hot out where you live?

the symptoms you have can be caused by low BP, but if they are replacing your aortic valve, it would be bad enough to be causing those kind of symptoms anyways, so they may just be a result of your valve being bad...

I try and drink plenty of fluids, when its hot out I use something with a little sodium in it (I like the EmergenC powdered vitamin C supplement, I just use it as an electrolyte replacer, cause it has potassium, which helps with my palpitations/ventricular ectopy) one of my favorites is mixing 1 part OJ to 3 parts water and chugging it

I also am not sure about the connection with the valve, but I believe there is, especially with me because my mitral valve has stenosis, it takes more time for the ventricle to fill, if the ventricle contracts before its full, not as much blood gets ejected, which means a lower BP, plus, then some of the blood that gets pumped out goes back in through the bad aortic valve (anyone have any more input here?)

I hope this helps
