:) Hi all!! I had my first post-op check up with my cardiologist today and all looks good!! No more murmur, no more leaking, and best of all I get to come off all my meds and only take an aspirin a day!! YEAH!! I go back in a year unless I have problems.

I really hope my heart will beat properly on its own without the meds. If you forgot, I went into A-Fib two weeks post-op and was put on coumadin, pacerone, and toprol XL. It did do the job, now I only hope it can do it on its own.

Has anyone else had A-Fib and how did you do when coming off meds?

As always, thanks for the support!!

Thanks Wayne. I am pretty excited. I just hope things stay going well.

I had bouts of a fib after surgery, first in the hospital which kept me there 3 days longer than I was scheduled for. A few times post surgery at home. They gave me sotalol which worked well. It has been several months now since my last episode. So I figure I might be out of the woods, at least I hope so! Currently on toprol xl and enalapril, I hope soon to be able to dump the toprol.

I'm glad to hear you got a good report.
I'll cross my fingers that the a-fib doesn't return.:)

Thanks DeWayne and Mary. So far, so good. My fingers are crossed also! A-Fib is not a fun thing to experience but I guess alot of us do at some point I just hope mine is over.

Cathy, afib is nothing compared to what you've been through! I consider myself lucky to have had an afib problem because it resulted in them finding my bicuspid aortic valve and dilated ascending aorta! Without afib, I might have ended up being one of those relatively healthy not too old buys that just dropped dead one day. (I might still, as surgery isn't going to occur for a couple of months!)

My afib was diagnosed about 6 years ago, although I had a few bouts before that. Sometimes, I would have 4 or 5 episodes a week, but most of them didn't last longer than 12 or so hours. The majority of them would start in the middle of the night and stop in the morning. With the right mix of a good med, supplements and stress control, I've been relatively afib free for almost two years, but I am going to have that surgically fixed also.

Don't panic with afib. It won't kill you. If you're still on coumadin from your surgery, you aren't in any danger. If you aren't on coumadin, the danger of afib lies in the potential of developing a clot and stroking. If your afib comes and goes, you probably won't develop a clot; there is some disagreement in the medical field, but most agree that you have to be in afib around 36 to 48 hours before clotting becomes an issue. If you're on coumadin, it isn't an issue.

Lay down, relax and it may just go away. For some people, gentle aerobic exercise drives it away. Just know it won't stay around too long and relax.

Thanks 67Walkon - I will keep your words of incouragement with me. I just got off of the coumadin that is why I was wondering how many had afib, got on coumadin, then went off of the med. Did their afib ever come back? I will continue to keep my fingers crossed!

Great news!
My husband was on Sotalol for two weeks for A-fib / A-Flutter which started in the hospital (lasted on and off for about 20 hrs.) and on Coumadin for 3 months. The A-fib /flutter thankfully never returned - which was a good thing since he only was in range just when he was getting off Coumadin.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you! Surgeon told my husband that it is not very likely that A-fib should re-occur.
All the best

Congrats on the great report and congrats on getting off all that medicine!

I guess we are all different but getting off medicine is something that has come very slowly for me. I have managed to shed a few but still take several.

Anyway, am happy for you.

Cathy,

Congratulations on the great check-up report from the Cardiologist and best wishes for continued uneventful recovery.

I have read your posts with some interest, as my surgery was similar to yours and occurred just one day before yours. I find it interesting the different approaches that the cardio docs take ? of course part of that is that their patients are all different as well.

I have seen my cardiologist several times in the past 3 ½ months, and he tells me that my heart sounds strong and healthy. A 24-hour Holter test showed a normal sinus rhythm. However, he wants me to stay on meds ? Amiodarone and beta-blocker (Lopressor) ? until the 6-month post-surgery point. Naturally, I pushed back with him on this, as indicators are good and I feel so good. However, I had afib a few days after surgery, and he does not want it to return (of course, I cannot disagree with that). His argument is that it is better to take the Amiodarone now, reducing the chances that I will need it again in the future. As this is a small dose (200 mg), and he is a very experienced cardiologist, I decided to go along with him.

I have an echo scheduled for July 17. I hope to be given a clean bill of health and to get off the meds then.

Anyway, I am so happy that things are going well with you. Keep in touch occasionally to tell us of your continuing progress.

Hey Cathy,

I'm going thru what you are pretty much. I got off Amioderone about a month ago, and just got off Tenormin yesterday. In another month I will get off Coumadin. My visit with the Electrocardiologist yesterday was very positive, even after being in AFib for some weeks post op and cardioverted he's happy (as am I in more ways than I can say) that I've been in NSR since March 13 (my cardioversion date, the day I call 'the day I got my life back'). He's willing to stop the drugs since I have no other risk factors (if it wasn't for that darn rheumatic fever as a child I'm really quite healthy).

I'm still crossing my fingers & toes, staying away from AFib triggers and behaving myself at cardio rehab and praying every day that the AFib stays away. No murmur, no leaking for once in my life! Sounds like you're in that boat with me.

I wish you all the best and of course wish you stay in NSR! :)

Ruth
