I hope you all had a pleasant weekend.
I found out the following details regarding mum's condition:-
Enlarged heart.
It is the Micral leaking.
Also her lungs are not too good.
There are few days she feels a little tired, but other than that, most days she feels fine and is in good spirits.
I believe she is to go for an engiogram next.
Also I'd appreciate your thoughts, (sorry for jumping tracks, probably too far ahead !! ). We live on a farm in a rural area which is a good 2 hrs driving from appropriate medical treatment in mum's circumstance. With this in mind, does anyone suggest it is wise to stay close to the hospital were the operation will be performed and if so, what is the approx. period of time post op. that this could be necessary ??
Kindest regards
Cheryl

Typically the stay in the hospital post-op is 5 - 7 days. We live just over an hour away from where I had my surgery. My wife stayed over in a hotel the day of my surgery, but then commuted every day to visit. She took the commuter train to avoid the hassle of driving in the city.

We were 2 hours from Dick's surgery. I stayed in a motel near the hospital for the whole time. Most hospitals will have an arrangement with the local hotels for a discount rate and some even have apartments or living facilities associated with the hospital where you and other family members can stay.

yes, stay near, especially during the surgery and for a day or so after. She needs someone with her to make sure she gets all that she needs. About the 3rd day she will be able to make her own demands and should come home within the 5-7 day period. It would be nice if someone could stay the whole time, but we all know there are jobs, children, etc that must be tended to. My nurse cousin stayed with me during the day and at a motel at night. I was very grateful. Blessins........

Hi Cheryl -

Many hospitals (here) will let a member of the patient's family roll a cot into the patient's room and stay there with them, after they're out of the ICU or CCU. My husband stayed in my room with me and I found it very comforting and helpful and it took some work off the nurses also. We live about three hours from where I had the valve replacement surgery.

As you think of more questions, please ask. You may want to also post other questions on the Pre-Surgery Forum. There are search capabilities on this site also, where you can type in the search word(s) and find more information. Take care and post again.
