This is probably a very stupid idea and an even sillier question but I am having surgery on 20th June to replace my bicuspid aortic valve. My question is that I have always wanted a tattoo but this surgery has sort of crept up on me and I feel I may have left it too late. Would it be a bad idea to get one so close to the surgery date ?? My initial blood work etc is on the 6th June.

Don't do it--now, or ever. I'd wanted a tattoo for my 30th birthday and called my cardio about it. His exact reply was, "What do you want to do a silly thing like that for?" To sum up, I'd be putting myself at risk for bacterial endocarditis. Even now, after my surgery, getting a tattoo is out of the question for the same reason. Although my valve is now "normal," the risk is still there, and that's why I still take antibiotics before dental work. If you really, really want a tattoo, best to ask your cardio.

John,
I think you've received good advice. I checked out the condition you listed on your profile, left ventricular non-compaction, and I think between that and a regurgitant aortic valve, you've got enough to worry about without adding bacterial infection to the list.:) Besides, I've read that it is sometimes hard to get a surgery date in England, so you might run the risk of having to postpone your surgery.

It's a bad idea because you also put your heart under stress while getting the tattoo. When we feel pain, the heart pumps faster and since you are scheduled for an op, why stress the poor thing?

Stick on tattoo are just as good.. and u can change your tattoo according to your mood. ;)
