I have read the total cholesterol/HDL ratio should be 4.5 or lower. My total cholesterol is 209, HDL 98, LDL 94, and Trigly. 83. The doctor listed the ratio as 2.1. Is this supposed to be good? It is less than half of 4.5. I have been told that my Cholesterol is high because my HDL is unusually high. The word unusually always makes me wonder. I take Pravachol 40mg for 4 years because two of my doctors believe it will prevent me from having blood clots. I have MVP with moderately severe regurg and a possible PFO. My Cholesterol has not changed since taking the Peavachol. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who is knowedgeable about Cholesterol

I have no idea what is supposed to be good or what is bad. I think they just want to sell statins to be honest.

They tell me mine is high because my HDL is 36 and my LDL is 130, total is 193. They don't like my HDL that low.

Now you tell me yours is too high, makes no sense to me at all.

Your HDL is rather high. I haven't heard of anyone being told they have too much good cholesterol. I'd be curious to know why that is considered a problem; not saying it isn't, but would like to know that answer.

I am quoting from the book Reversing Heart Disease by Julian Whitaker, MD where he states: " A ratio less than 3.1 is desirable" which seems to make your 2.1 remarkable. Congrats!
Ratio is calculated Total Cholesterol divided by HDL

Forgot to mention, that Dr. Whitaker also states that statin drugs deplete the body of Coenzyme Q10. You might want to ask your doctor if you should be taking Q10 supplements.

I take many vitamins and CoQ10 100 mg is one of them. My Cardio still thinks my total Cholesterol 209 is too high. As I wrote before I take Pravachol 40 mg for 4 years and there has been little change in my numbers. Except for the HDL all the other numbers have gone down a little less than 10 pts each. I have read in people having a heart attack only 1 in 5 has high cholesterol.
Sometimes I think I am strange. I take a statin and dont really have high cholesterol and I take Toprol XL a beta blocker for my mvp (palpatations), however my bp is 110 over 60 to 120 over 70 and people usually take a bb for hbp.

High Cholesterol is only one marker of heart disease, c-reactive protein is another.
My husband controls his cholesterol naturally with ground flax seeds, fish oil, Q10, exercise and a healthy diet - he was on Lipitor before which gave him muscle aches and his numbers are actually better now with the supplements. He just informed the GP he would be stopping the Lipitor. Then again, he knew his arteriers were clean. I am not telling you just to go off it but maybe you should discuss it with your GP or cardio or change doctors if you are uncomfortable. Wishing you all the best
