Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum. Two years ago I was diagnosed with moderate Aortic Stenois. I have a bicuspid Aortic valve. Recently, I have noticed some symptoms such as tightness in my chest and running out of breath while climbing stairs and other strenuous activity. I am 67, in otherwise good health, workout 3-4 days a week and do lots of ballroom dancing. I live in Manhattan and am looking for a highly recommended Cardiologist for an evaluation as well as a surgeon who specializes in AVR should I need surgery.

So far I have found an enormous weath of information here and am delighted to have discovered you. As I have always been fortunate to have had exellent health, I find it is difficult to adjust to the fact that I have something wrong with my heart and to come to terms with my denial.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I am glad that you found this forum and would like to welcome you.
I am not from NYC so cant recommend any good cardiologist but I am sure ther are a lot of people here who can help you out.

Just wanted to let you know that I am 26 and will be needing a valve replacement within a month. I was also born with bicuspid aorta and dont have any major symptoms but my doctor said that my valve is very tight.
But I think what ever happens happens for good so dont worry everything will be fine and wll keep you in my prayers.

Regards
Swati

Hi Jerry,

Welcome to the VR community. Glad you found us. Unfortunately, I'm not from NYC (or the U.S. for that matter) so can't help you with finding a Cardiologist over there. I'm sure others will come by shortly with suggestions. Best wishes.

cardiologists in NYC

My cardiologist is Ari Paley at the ambulatory clinic at Bellevue Hospital Center on First Avenue. He looks like he's about twelve years old but he is really excellent.

I had my valve replacement surgery done there at Bellevue too. Don't be fooled by all the historical and literary references about that wonderful hospital. The CV (Cardio Vascular) surgery unit at Bellevue is particularly first rate. No frills, but I was really impressed and they did right by me. I'm now five months post operation and doing well.

Here is another cardiologist someone recently recommended to me in Brooklyn:

Dr. Gopa
at 8th Avenue and President Street in Park Slope

Good luck. It sounds like you should probably act soon.

HiThere,
Has your gp recomended anyone? I needed to have a Mitral valve repaired and a friend of mine recommended a cardio and I like her. She gave me the names of 2 surgeons. I used Dr. Colvin at NYU. He is exellent. I dont know if that is his specialty but you can look him up on the net. Also Dr. Oz and his group at Columbia Prespreterain are exeptional. If you want any info, feel free to e- mail me directly at [email protected]

I was in a hurry yesterday and didn't really finish. There is some general information that is good to know about the hospitals in NYC.

First of all, the best hospitals in the city are the ones related to either NYU or Columbia. Someone recommended in this listing a hospital related to Columbia (Columbia Presbyterian?), I believe. Cornell, also related to the Columbia system, is also known for its excellence in cardiac surgery, and since both of these hospitals are related to Columbia, you'll find the same group of surgeons operating in them. Another one is Methodist on 7th Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn, which has recently been bragging about it's advanced capability for cardiac surgery, and because of the association with Columbia I would tend to believe them. Similarly, the hospitals in the NYU network are equally good. The office of Dr. Colvin, whom the previous poster mentioned, is located at the NYU Medical Center, and the attending surgeons at the Cardio Vascular surgery unit at Bellevue are from this same office. The attending surgeon for my procedure at Bellevue was Dr. Charles Schwartz, who operates out of Colvin's group.

Hi
I live in NY and had my mitral valve repaired in 2005. My surgeon was Dr. Karl Krieger of the NY Presbyterian Hospital (Cornell-Weill) located First Ave and 69 St. Dr Krieger is the surgeon who operated Dave Letterman and Regis (he was on TV in the Regis show about a week ago)

My cardiologist is Dr. Nancy Roistacher at Memorial Sloan Kettering. If you want their telephone number send me a message

Hi everone,
First I again want to thank everyone for their helpful replies. I just purchased a book called Castle Connolly Top Doctors (for the New York Metro Area). It was recommended to by by a doctor friend as a great source for Doctors. These doctors are rated by their peers as the best in their field. Under Cardiovascular disease in Manhattan, I found 75 listings. Of these there were 15 that had Heart Valve Disease in their specialities. I decided then to choose from those at Columbia Presbyterian and Mt. Sinai. The former because of the large number of these doctors associated with that center and the later because of convenience of it's location. There were 9 at Columbia Presbyterian and 3 at Mt. Sinai.
The Columbia Presbyterian doctors are David Blumenthal, Jeffrey Borer, Ronald Drusin, Richard Fuchs, Jerry Gliklich, Lawrence Inra, Mazen Kamen, Stephen Scheidt, and Joseph Tenenbaum.
The Mt. Sinai Doctors are Valentin fuster, Martin Goldman, Alan Hecht
I would welcome any thoughts or suggestions about these doctors

Hi Jerry - I just wanted to welcome you to the site. Glad you found it pre-op. At 67, you might want to consider a tissue valve. One of the things I read here pre-op that made a lot of sense to me was to find an excellent surgeon and go with the valve he recommends and is skilled in using. So you may want to keep whatever valve choice in mind that you are leaning toward as you search for an excellent surgeon. At age 42, there were several reasons that I wanted a tissue valve and my surgeon recommended the valve that I now have. Take care and post again.

(edit - I just noticed this is in the Post Surgery forum; maybe it will get moved to a more appropriate forum.
Also Jerry, have you read the "sticky" at the top of the Valve Selection forum? You may find that to be very beneficial information.)

Dr. Steven Colvin

Dr. Steven Colvin

Hello- we are using Dr.Colvin at NYU this Friday for my sons surgery. He is having his aortic valve replaced and his ascending done as well. He is known for his superior skill and minimally invasive technique. Best of luck.

Hi Jerry,
I've been visiting this site for a while but never posted before. I just want to let you know that I'm under the care of Dr. Martin Goldman of Mount Sinai. He is a wonderful, caring and understanding doctor.

Good Luck!
