My cardio has me on a combination of Altace and Toprol XL to help me reduce my 140/90 BP hypertension. Ever since I started this combination, I've noticed a ringing in my ears. Enough where I no longer hear my mechanical valve click like I used to.

The Toprol XL information pamphlet indicates that this is a side effect that I should notify my doctor of. I plan to do that, however anyone know the medical reason why this happens?

Thanks! :)

Allen, I don't know the answer to your question, but I once experienced constant ringing in my ears and I had been taking Pepto Bismal pretty continuously for 24 hours. On the bottle it said to call the doctor if one experienced ringing in the ears. I was on vacation at the time so I called the pharmacist instead and was told, "stop taking it, it's a sign of an overdose." Of course, I stopped and the ringing did too. I don't mean to suggest you are overdosing, but calling a pharmacist may yield speedy info. You can always follow up with your doctor in the morning.

I'm taking metoprolol 75 mg daily to control heart rate....I get horrible ringing in my ears but only when I lie down. (pressure change?) I do sleep okay, so I guess it diminishes when I fall asleep.

I take metroprolol, a 25 mg twice a day, and have pretty loud ringing in the ears. Every time I've mentioned it to various doctors, I get a big shrug of the shoulders, and suggestions maybe caffeine or old age (thanks a bunch!) are causing it. I plan to take this up with my new GP and my cardio the first week of May.
