Please accept my apology for the late communication! Between caring for Nick & our 3 little ones (ages 2, 7 & 10), I haven't been able to spend much time online.

His surgery was on Monday 2/26 as scheduled and lasted 4 hours. It was an aortic valve replacement only. (25mm On-X) His surgeon assured us that a root replacement was not necessary. He was in ICU until the following afternoon. There were some side effects with the Percocet - nausea, lightheadedness and waves of heat. He was feeling pretty bad all day on Tuesday. They switched the pain med to Norco on Wednesday & he did much better on that. He walked for the first time on Wednesday night just once around the hall but came back feeling shaky & sore. Thursday was a dramatically different day. He felt much better and walked 4 times throughout the day.

He was discharged on Friday morning with an INR of 3.0. The target range for him is 2.5 - 3.5. He has been alternating 2.5 mg & 5mg of Coumadin, and his INR on Monday was 3.3. He was advised to keep alternating the dose until next week when they'll check it again.

Every day is better than the one before & his attitude has been very positive. I am very grateful & relieved that things went so well but haven't been able to sleep much at night and have been feeling very anxious & overwhelmed. I'm sure I'll be feeling normal again soon, though.

Again, I'm sorry for taking so long to give an update. Knowing that your thoughts & prayers were with us made this whole experience better!

*Great news....looks like the hardest bit is behind you all. Take care of yourself also..you have a lot on your plate. Best Wishes.

Shei,
Glad to hear your husband's surgery went well. It sounds like you have your hands full but have it under control.

Thanks, Shei, for letting us know Nick is home and doing well.
I bet YOU'RE tired!

Thanks for the update, Shei. I really do think it's harder on the caretaker than the patient some times- especially when you have three little ones as well. It sounds like Nick is doing great. Try to catch a nap when you can and hang in there- every day will be better!

Glad to hear that he did well and that things seem to be going well. Both of you get your rest! Don't let him try to be Superman!

Hi Shei - Glad to hear how well your husband is doing! 2, 7, and 10 -- you sure do have your hands and hearts full. Thanks for the update and give Nick our well wishes and please post again when you can.

Glad to know Nick's surgery went well ... and that he is back home :).

Thoughts/prayers for a continued SUCCESSFUL recovery!

Hi Shei

Glad to hear everything went so well.....As long as he is walking, napping, and breathing and that INR is fine.....maybe it is now time for YOU to take a deep breath and do something nice for yourself....even if it's only a nap. I know how hard AVR is on the patient, but it's also very stressful for the caregiver and you only have so much strength, time, patience, care, love and support to give before YOU start having trouble. Please, take a half hour just for you....even if it's just a relaxing bath.

Keep on keepin on.....and remember, the worst IS over.

Evelyn

Sounds very good!

Expect his INR to drop as he excercises more and more. Also it may drop some when he starts eating his normal diet. I know he's not eating right at the moment, because everything tastes terrible. Don't let them test his INR more then twice a week. Preferably only once a week. If they do, they don't understand Coumadin. It takes 3 days for dose to show in the test results. Should he be on or need other meds, check to see what interaction they have with the Coumadin. Some make INR go up and others drag it down.
