Two quick questions for discussion:

1. How fast does food, etc. that can affect your INR do affect your INR?

2. How long does that effect last?

For it to regisiter. 2-3 days. Lasting effects will vary depending upon how you process. Did you induldge in greens on your ski trip:confused: ;)

Foods play a very small role in your overall INR. You'd have to pig and pig and pig on one thing to cause much of an increase or decrease and then, as soon as the food has left your body, it should return to normal.

I was told the same thing.....it takes about 3 days before high vit K foods will affect your INR.
I make sure to only feed my turtles romaine lettuce once a week because I know I will see it and want it.....:D

I do believe that it is the Coumadin/Warfarin that takes three days to show up in your INR. Further, I believe that food is digested in a matter of a few hours, which would mean that Vitamin K from the food should, IMHO, be released into the body in a matter of a few hours.

I am thinking of the practice that many of us here use when our INRs are too high. We make an adjustment with our Coumadin/Warfarin (which takes three days to catch up) and we also drink V-8 or eat large amounts of the green vegs that we normally would eat less of.

Interesting question.

Please tell me that your not denying yourself Romaine just because of Coumadin. You should be dosing the diet you eat, not diet the dose of the drug.

Food is digested within 12 hours. Waste products are gone soon after. The K you get in food is in and out before you know it.

I have to admit that it makes me nervous to eat too much high K food, so I eat small amounts of it and spread it out.
Like, 2 pieces of broccoli with extra carrots; or 3 brussel spouts with extra corn, sharing that lettuce...I guess it's better to eat some more greens.
I'm just starting my second year on coumadin, and hopefully will be less nervous of getting too low.

Man your killing yourself! I'm telling you, eat all you want but be consistent or as close to consistent as you can, adjust your dose to match that diet and LIVE! You missing too many good things in life and it doesn't have to be like that.

When I eat broccoli, I eat a bowl full. When I eat brussel sprouts, usually 9 of them. Spinich, usually a cup. Salads as much as I want whenever I want. Food does not take that much of a toll on your INR. I'd love to smack the fool senseless that tell people to stay away from Vit K content foods.

Yeah your right, whatever you choose to do. I just hate seeing people deprive themselves when there isn't any reason too. :)

You people got me hungry for vitamin K.....romaine and light mayo on my sandwich at lunch, and a small serving of raspberries tonight.

Friday is INR blood test; it's been 5 weeks.
