Hello again

New Dr. Took me off from high blood pressure med. and put me on beta blocker with a low dosage. I already saw couple article about beta blockers causing sexual impotence. I asked to the DR he said thats really not common ( %5 chance he said). I said we ll see if it effects then I will stop it he said ok dont worry.

So is there anybody out there who uses Beta Blocker and still manage to be a tiger ?

I've been on a low dose of beta blockers for over 3 years with no problems below the belt. I think they do make your reflexes just a slight bit slower and at first I noticed a bit of trouble concentrating for long periods of time but that seems to have slowly subsided, or else I'm getting used to it.

It's different for each person, so you really can't gauge it for yourself until you try it. It's a small percentage. Most men don't encounter that problem. If you do, you'll be the first to know.

Don't worry about it ahead of time. If you do, and it should happen, then you really won't be sure what made it happen, your heart or your head.

Best wishes,

Tigress would be more accurate.;)
Seriously, due to the side effect you mention, I was reluctant to start on a beta blocker. I've had no problems.

One more tigress checking in!!! Began beta blockers in June last year and have gained more weight than I would like to acknowledge. My husband used to say (many years ago) that when we married he had to shake the sheets to find me because I was so thin. Sheets still shake, but not because I'm hard to find!!!

37 y.o. male here......Ross Procedure 6 months ago. I take 50mg of Toprol XL 2X/day. I have not had any problems expressing my inner Tiger. :D My wife seems to think the meds have actually worked opposite of their reputation. ;)

I'll also second Jim's comment about reflexes. I play high-level tennis, and I can tell my "court-quickness" is a micro-second slow. I did not have this problem before the surgery.

No to derail the thread, but what other effects have you seen from the beta blockers? In particular, how many feel the beta blockers are responsible for significant weight gain and tiredness? I blame my beta blocker (Coreg) for both.

I also definately blame the beta-blocker for my weight gain. I read on the Heart Foundation website that it can slow your metabolism by around 10%. Makes it doubly important to watch your diet and keep up the walking/exercise (stuff we are 'sposed to be doing anyway). The only other side-effect I have noticed is that sometimes I get sleepy in the afternoon but not always.

From my wife's experience I have seen some side effects.
She has been on Antenolol for about four and a half years.
It is also a very low dosage, but it does cause some tiredness, weight gain, and unkown to some, it can trigger your immune system as in her case. This caused her to get psoriasis. So she is not happy with these things, but it is protecting her heart.
As far as the other thing it may decrease one's interest, but as Bob said everyone is different so you won't really know until you try it.

All of my days I have had more energy than should be allowed. But, since June last year when I needed to take Toprol XL 50 I have been a ghost of myself. I am tired all of the time and sleep 8-10 hours a day. My doctors say that this is the price I must pay to escape the problems of a-fib. Hummm. It is hard because I have always been a high energy person.

When I stopped smoking, I gained 9.5 lbs in one year. When I began taking Toprol, I gained 15 lbs in 6 months. Usually I can knock off pounds easily. Not this time.

I had a gain of 8 pounds after 11 weeks of starting the Toprol XL. I am working like crazy to get it off. :( :( I can tell that I'm a little more tired than usual, but it seems like I have some control over it.:)

my dr took me off atenolol and put me on toprol xl. I began to cough and found here that it can cause that so I asked to be put back on atenolol and was. I have the odd dreams, am tired, but not coughing! I do have the driest skin I have ever had and wonder how close it is to psoriasis. I found that Avon skin so soft sprayed after shower helps. I have been on atenolol for a long time and tolerate it well.
