My doctor had prescribed MetroGel for my occasinal rosacea years ago before my surgery and warfarin and now I'm wondering if I can use it. I asked my family doctor and he said that I can since it's a topical gel, but since I see on the warfarin fact sheet from the pharmacy that it's not good to take with coumadin. I'm a little reluctant to use the MetroGel, but on the other hand, I don't want a red nose. Is it safe to use? Marcie

Joe used it for years and years. No problem for him. He used it for rosacea also. He used it every day. You only use a little anyway.

Get Al's input, but it may make your INR rise. You'll want to test more frequently and adjust your dose for the increase, but you should still be able to use it.

Drug Interaction: Oral metronidazole has been reported to potentiate the anticoagulant effect of coumarin and warfarin,
resulting in a prolongation of prothrombin time. Drug interactions should be kept in mind when METROGEL®
(metronidazole gel), 1% is prescribed for patients who are receiving anticoagulant treatment, although they are less
likely to occur with topical metronidazole administration because of low absorption.

If there is broken skin, you might get enough absorbed to cause a problem otherwise it is probably ok.
