I have a friend whose mother had an aortic disection some time ago and has been on warafin ever since.

She mentioned in passing that her mother's INR is higher during the summer and drops during the winter.

Is this true, does anyone else have any experience of this happening to them.

With it being in the high 30's here in West Australia it could explain why my INR isn't dropping post surgery as i expected it to.

Regards.

Magic, many of us here report higher INR's during the heat of summer. Al Lodwick hasn't been able to find an "official" explanation for this, but it does seem to occur for some people. My weekly dose usually has be be lowered during the summer months.

We discussed this earlier this summer. I'll echo my response from that thread...

Don't you know your blood thins in summer and thickens in winter....

Just kidding Al. Don't let your blood boil... I'm guessing that boiling blood would really screw up your INR - right Al?:D

Seriously though - maybe there are other reasons that are RELATED to temp that could alter the INR (i.e. drinking less water in the winter, less perspiration/evaporation in the winter, less active in the winter, eating different foods, etc...). I don't know for sure although, as Karlynn mentioned, some members have reported differences in INR in winter vs. summer. Also maybe you won't experience as much of a drop as you were expecting - just because that's how you are?

David, your suggestions are plausible. I think it's one of those things that no one has cared enough about it to research it.

There was a report put out on this subject a while back. You could try a search on the anti-coagulant forum.

I think that it might happen if someone spent little time in a climate-controlled building. Most of us live at the same temperature + or - a few degrees all year round.

Could be the excuse I've been looking for to put AC in my 2500 sf ranch. Some have $10,000 laying around they'd like to give me?
