Well, one year has passed since "the event" and it both seems like yesterday and seems like it's so long ago that it never happened. Everyday life is an ablsolute breeze (heart-wise), but I fear that I will never be able to run quite as far or as fast as I did pre-surgery. However, that will certainly not stop me from trying as I aim to complete a half-marathon one month from now. To those in the waiting room, OHS is not nearly as bad as I feared. The pain is manageable, the recovery is slow, but steady.

The most important thing is that I thank all of you out there who have answered my seemingly never-ending stream of posts where I found myself freaking out about some thing or another, certain that my repair had failed and that I was soon to be under the knife again. I believe I have settled down some and gained a little confidence, but I'm sure I'll continue to have occasional "episodes" in the future. I also want to thank everyone for the extensive education that I have gotten on heart physiology and health. I actually pulled out my Inpatient Operation Report this morning and was able to read through it and understand most of what happened. I remember looking at it just prior to my discharge and getting confused midway through the first sentence and bored midway through the first paragraph.

Anyways, I wanted to relate the last line from my operation report, which for some reason gives me the most comfort of all:

"The sponge count and needle count were correct."

Amen to that.

Congratulations, Mike and best wishes for the marathon. I'm glad you are comfortable with your repair and I hope each and every year brings you more confidence and good health.

I certainly hope the sponge count and needle count were correct!!! Imagine if someone saw a report where it was not correct! By the way, I also kind of worry that my mitral valve repair will not last.

Congrats, Mike. One year is a big milestone and you are right about the time thing. Sometimes it seems like yesterday and sometimes it seems like something we read about happening to someone else.

You will always worry now and then about your valve - it is normal. However, as time goes on, it will become less and less forefront. Eventually you will find you rarely think about it and your life will be totally separate from the heart patient thing.

Best of luck with the marathon - have fun.

Congratulations on the one year mark. I'm sure it feels like a major accomplishment. Anxious to hear how the 1/2 marathon goes for you. Which one are you running and do you have a projected time? I hope you'll give us a full report on Active Lifestyles when it is completed. Good Luck.

Mike,

Congratulations on anniversary No 1, which is always a biggie.

Like you, I couldn't have begun to decipher the medspeak in the report of my operation until after spending a lot of time on vr.com.

Good luck on the half-marathon.

Congratulations on your one year birthday. It is a big event. I found that after the one year mark came and went I was able to focus less on the trauma of having had OHS. I an glad things are going well for you.
Joanne
