ST meaning?

What I know is pretty sketchy, but maybe it will help a little. I think that the P, Q, R, S and T represent points on the EKG graph and each point corresponds to a place in the heart where the electrodes are measuring an electrical impulse. The QRS wave is the big spike on the EKG strip and the P, Q and T are other points before or after the QRS. If you know what you're looking for (and I surely don't) I guess they can tell all kinds of things about the condition/operation of your heart by what the waves do between the points.

If you google "EKG interpretation" you can maybe find specifically what you're looking for.

Ann, the ST is one of the areas on the EKG looked at to see if the heart is showing injury from reduced oxygen (ischemia) or a part has been destroyed from lack of oxygen(infarction). Many times you will find references to it being "elevated" or "depressed" or oftentimes "non-specific ST changes". It is just one parameter that is looked at when reading an EKG.

My question to you would be what prompts your question in this area?

I thought Ross was kidding when he said ST comes after QRS. Well, heck, everybody knows that, don't we?

I had a persantine stress test today and all my arteries are still clean after bypass 6 1/2 yrs ago but my ST on the EKG has changed since Dec, 2005. The ST line is lower than it was then. My dr isn't worried since bypasses are still good and no clogging but will watch this. He says the xrays are more important and accurate than the EKG because they can actually SEE the arteries. I saw them, too and they are just round holes.

In watching the monitor I could see the heart pumping regularly for a bit and then it would do something (like pause) weird, then back to regular again, etc. Sometimes in the quiet of night I think I can also feel it - and in taking my pulse at the wrist. Is this possible?

I have had a few chest pains over the past few months and the dr wanted me to do this test again. Stress has been my companion this year when my bro got so ill - and still is gravely ill. I know that stress and anger are my worst enemies when it comes to heart issues. They told me that when I had the bypass surgery and to be careful of it.

Thanks all - you helped me on this one.

Stress just affects about everthing doesn't it. I think your heart is probably beating out of sequence sometimes. The beats are called PACs or PVC. The PACs are when the atria starts the out of sequence beat and the PVCs happen when the Ventricles initiate the out of sequence beat. I bet that is what you feel happening during the night and what you can sometimes feel when taking your pulse. I think everyone gets them sometimes. When seen in the picture of newly appearing chest discomfort, high stress, and some ST depression then I think it is good to keep a watchful eye on it. Lets just home they are some of the FLBs (funny little beats;) .

I just noticed you list a carepage by your signature. Is it for your brother? I need to go visit your page. My mom suffered with Parkinson's disease for so many years I can't help but feel deeply when I hear of someone else doing likewise.

Seriously Ann, I hope everything is going well with you and that you have a good doctor keeping tabs on you.

Thank you Betty. My dr is a very caring, quiet man. He is good at explaining when I ask questions. I switched to him when my original cardio was only allowing 10 mins per pt - so I'd see the assistant who gave me as much time as I wanted. Then this dr started coming to town and that's when Richard and I both switched - no more 140 miles drive for us to see the dr for 10 minutes. I really appreciate him.

yes, that's my brother on the care pages. We have kept him on there since early this year - maybe april. entries are less these days because there's not much to post. Hospice has been brought in - but my dear bro bounces back from death's door to some lucidity, but no physical activity. He has not walked even one step since he got so ill in Feb. Thanks for caring.
