Ladies: Has Coumadin effected your menstral flow?

Hi, I had MVR last March. I also feel the amount of blood increased after Coumadin, though it’s not heavy enough to make me consider ablation. Also, after about a year of irregular cycles following MVR, I seem to have settled into about 25-day cycles of 7~9 days now, which is shorter cycle and...

    Please help with surgeon selection!

Hi SpecialHeart, It’s up to you ultimately, but if I were you, I would go with No.2. I had my first valve-replacement (mitral only) at 21 yrs old, with bovine tissue, and re-replaced that one with St. Jude mechanical 10 years later, at 31 yrs old (cause of re-op: severe mitral stenosis...

    sushi

Hi, sood, I’m glad you enjoy sushi. You might know this already but just to be safe since you are on warfarin (right?), please avoid eating Natto rolls at a sushi place. I've seen it on the menu of many sushi restaurants in the States. Natto is made by fermenting soybeans using bacteria...

    Happy 29th Birthday nia 誕生日おめでとう

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes. Greg, your happy birthday song video made my day! My cow valve is now into its 8th year without much change. Still, I should start looking for surgeons now and figure out how to make sure that he/she does me. The doctor-patient relationship and...

    Happy Birthday nia (27)

Thank you Thank you Thank you very much everyone for your warm wishes. I really appreciated it. It was very touching to read the messages. I don't post, so I don't feel that I contribute to the site at all... My bovine mitral valve is now 5 years old and is doing fine, and as 2009 is the...

    Alternate therapies

I can?t contribute much since I don?t do any alternative therapies myself, but there is a book (I think this book has been mentioned on this site several times) Mehmet Oz?s Healing from the Heart that talks about benefits of integrating alternative medicine/treatments into the traditional...

What caused your bacterial endocarditis and how soon did you have symptoms?

Cause: Unknown Onset of symptoms to time of diagnosis: ~1 week Time of diagnosis to surgery: 2-3 (?) days Previous heart history: none (Actually, I've been sick only three times before that. Was any of them an undiagnosed rheumatic fever? I'll never know.) Mooing happily for 2.5 years.

    Bacterial Endocarditis fear

Would you be able to see/get a referral for an infectious diseases doctor? That's who I see for sore throats (she is actually sort of my PCP, even though my insurance doesn't require one). You could get a strep test, or press for a blood culture. Keep in mind though that taking antibiotics...

    endocarditas after OHS

That is exactly what and when I take (Clindamycin instead of Penicillin because I'm allergic to Penicillin). My dentist said it takes about an hour for the antibiotic to get into the bloodstream, and it stays there for about 4 hours.

    Places you'd like to go

I would LOVE to go to Falling Water as well. Like David, I've only studied it at school. Aside from that, I'd also like to go to Alaska, Spain, Greece, and Easter Island.

    endocarditas after OHS

I had the acute form which led to the MVR. THe first recognizable symptoms were sudden loss of appetite and feeling sick. That happened around midnight. The same night I woke up to shaking chills that went on for a few minutes. In the next few days, I vomited, had another seizure-like...

    New member to the site

Hi KJ, welcome to the site! I am a 24-year-old female as well, and had a mitral valve replacement about three years ago when I was 21. I never even considered something could go wrong with my heart until after I woke up from the surgery. It sucks to have to join this club at such a young age...

    Second OHS Surgery......

This is EXACTLY what I've been wondering too! My scar is keloid (top half especially...), and my skin breaks easily and usually doesn't heal as smoothly when I cut or scratch myself. My last echo (TEE) showed some focal thickening of the new valve, so I'm sort of worried that I'm already...

Dear Nan, Dear Nan, I?m glad you were able to get a top-notch surgeon. Best of luck with the coming consultation and surgery.

    Catheter-Inserted Valves?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I?ve always wondered whenever replacement via catheter is brought up. Does this method work for RE-replacements? By the time my tissue valve needs to be replaced (in 5-10 years), it?ll be coated in scar tissue and/or rock solid with calcification...

I'm 25, Having a Ross on 4-18-06, Hoping to talk to another 20 something!

Hi Robert, I turned 24 last month, and was 21 at the time of the surgery (MVR). I got a lot of "you're too young" from the medical staff as well as from other patients on the floor (and their family members), but after a while, I grew to enjoy all the pampering and the attention (and...

    I made it...now I have questions!

Glad to hear that all went well with your surgery. About the chills: Not to scare you, but night chills/shakes (felt like a seizure) were the first recognizable symptoms I had of endocarditis before all went downhill. It is true that experiencing them is one of the post-op phases, since our...
