Follow up from AV repair (2 year old)

Many of you may remember Wren (http://echobaby.blogspot.com) who had OHS in November. He was facing valve repair or replacement, Ross etc and we had many different opinions from cardiologists and surgeons about the way to go. A few weeks ago we had his 3 month follow up to the repair. The...

My baby boy has Aortic Valve Stenosis.

Toddler with aortic stenosis (AS) Toddler with aortic stenosis (AS) Hi My son, Wren (2), has aortic stenosis and his current gradient is the same as your sons! (its 32-38 on various echos). His was progressive and not isolated to the valve (ie your son has a less-serious heart defect!). It...

AMA. AHA: 2008 Guidelines for the Management of Adults Wit

I found this article very informative. It gives guidelines for cardiologists in managing patients with BAV which is classified as a CHD. It also provides recommendations for valve replacement surgery thresholds and management of valve issues. You need to download the file which is in PDF...

Why do tissue valves last longer in older patients?

I asked our surgeon about this in regard to my young (2 year old) son. He said that the rate of calcium dumping is much higher in younger people (extremely high in young children) as this relates to healthy bone growth. I gather the body dumps calcium on structures to build bones? As we age...

    valve replacement for four-year-old boy

Recent valve surgery with Dr Hanley Recent valve surgery with Dr Hanley Hi Belen My son Wren is just 2 and just had OHS for his stenotic aortic valve. We sought second opinions and eventually chose to travel from Seattle to Stanford so Dr Hanley could be Wren's surgeon. In the end Dr Hanley...

    Pulmonary Valve Choice for Child

My son has just been discharged after OHS for an aortic valve and sub-aortic repair. While in the CVICU we met two other families whose children (age 8 and 15) were in for pulmonary valve replacements. It was their 3rd and 4th surgeries respectively. BOTH received porcine valves from Dr Frank...

Surgery tomorrow - updating via blog

Hi Thank you for remembering Wren (22mths) in his surgery tomorrow. We met with the PA today and apparently his case was fairly controversial. There was quite a bit of discussion before deciding whether to do a valve replacement, repair or even something drastic like a norwood (should the...

Anybody know anything about the double-switch Ross Procedure?

Hi My son has a BAV and aortic stenosis as well as LVOT obstructions. He is having surgery on Nov 7th. We had a lengthy discussion with surgeons and cardiologists about the Ross-Kono procedure. The double switch option was never mentioned. BUT We were told that recent studies suggest that...

    Pulmonary Valve Choice for Child

Mechanical valves in children Mechanical valves in children Hi I know this is a slight hijack to the thread but I have noticed all this discussion of mechanical valves and Coumadin for kids so I couldn't resist. My son (Wren) is 22 months old and is facing surgery for left-ventricular outflow...

    Pulmonary Valve Choice for Child

Hi My name is Shannon and my son is 22 months old. I recently posted a question regarding the Ross procedure for him. One of the issues with the Ross is the pulmonary valve which is replaced and I have been researching the valves a bit. Like you, I am extremely frustrated by the degree of...

    Ross procedure counter-indicated by BAV?

Sorry to confuse you. We are weighing the opinions of two surgeons. The view of one surgeon is in writing and the other one has been conveyed to us through our cardiologist. with whom he works. So the cardiologist seems to favor the local surgical approach although he was encouraging us to...

    Ross procedure counter-indicated by BAV?

The surgeon advocating the bio-prosthetic believes he can get a 'small adult' size in so they expect degeneration not size to be the complicating factor in re-operation.

    Ross procedure counter-indicated by BAV?

Its interesting that the surgeon who is recommending the Ross is Dr Hanley who is one of the 'gurus' in pediatric cardio-thoracic surgery, does 100's of procedures a year including some life-saving ones he pioneered: http://www.lpch.org/findADoctor/search/doc.pl?doc=16523&resultSet=16523 We...

    Ross procedure counter-indicated by BAV?

He requires OHS within two months for the stenosis either side of the valve. They will need to "address" the valve at the same time - not because the stenosis is critical but because it may be insufficient after surgery and/or may be impossible to get the blockage since it is so close to the valve.

    Ross procedure counter-indicated by BAV?

My son is 20 months old and has complex left-side heart defects: 1) Repaired hypoplastic aortic arch 2) Repaired coarctation of the aorta 3) BAV - mildly stenotic and slightly thickened leaflets 4) Stenosis below AND above the valve (critical level) 5) Parachute mitral valve, small side of...
