Is there someplace I can find the agenda of activities at this event?

It was a very good year

Overall this was a good year for me but not a great one. Pretty much every race I ran was a personal worst. Nevertheless, I did 1111 mi running and 532 biking, and I still can fog a mirror. We should appreciate what we have.

    Turkey Trots

I ran the Berwick, PA Run for the Diamonds on Thanksgiving day. It was the 100th anniversary running of this race which is one of the oldest continuously held races in the world. The race is 9 miles and has only one major hill (it goes up over 800 ft in a mile). I'd call it a mountain. I did...

    Running question

It's summer now and I've found that my heart rate recovers much slower when it is hot. I understand it has something to do with the need for circulation for cooling, even after you've satisfied your need for oxygen. On cool days, your pulse should drop quicker.

    Competitive Cyclist

I'm curious as to what you doctor said when you told him you were interested in starting back biking. If I were in your position, I think I'd be sticking with a stationary bike for a little while yet. You can get a good workout without the risk of falls and road bumps. Put the Tour de France on...

    Running worse after surgery

I sometimes wonder if the plerual effustion did any damage. Does anyone out there know about long term effects of pleural effusion, if any? Thanks Sumo for the age grading link. For 5 miles, my age graded times were around the low 29s prior to surgery and afterwards they've been aroudn 33+. So...

    Running worse after surgery

Sumo, assuming that your surgery happened between the ages of 41 and 51, then there is that 45-60 sec per mile drop due to surgery. Is that a correct assumption? Where did you find that age graded calculator?

    Running worse after surgery

Thanks, Sumo. That's exactly what a friend of mine said when I got second place in my age group at a race recently (there were only 4 in my age group). Waiting for people to die doesn't exactly sound like a postive apporach to racing.

    Running worse after surgery

Sumo, that's a pretty consistent long term trend. You've been at it for a while. I have times going back to the mid-60s. In the 70s and 80s, I could do 5 miles in the 28-29 minute range but not on that same course. I saw my caridologist for my annual visit yesterday. After the EKG, he came in...

    Running worse after surgery

Oaktree, those are very valid questions. I knew I had a heart murmur ever since I was a teen. My local cardiologist pointed out that my heart was enlarging and I would have problems if I didn't have the mitral valve repaired. I was completely asymptomatic but he said I should get it while I was...

    Running worse after surgery

I still haven't heard back about registration for the Cardiac Athletes site. I'm going in for my annual cardiologist visit Thursday. Is there any question I should ask the doctor to get him thinking about anything that can be done to help me? Usually he just gives me an EKG and listens to my...

    Running worse after surgery

Thanks folks for all the suggestions, sympathy and empathy. It's reassuring to hear that there are others out there with similar problems. However, I have to agree with Bill, in that I didn't submit my original posting for sympathy. I am looking for a solution. "Just be happy you can run"...

    Running worse after surgery

Thanks again folks. This discussion has gotten me to dig up some reports and test results. The cardiologist at the hospital where surgery was performed said, "...I am actually quite ecstatic with the results and the continued success of surgery." He used the word "normal" a lot in his report...

    Running worse after surgery

Recovery for running Recovery for running Thanks for all the feedback folks. Yes, I may realize that I may be forced to surrender and admit that my case is hopeless and I should be happy I?m not dead. But I?m not ready to do that yet. I don?t want to find out 10 years from now that there was...
