New to site and pre-surgery for BAV

Welcome! As you have seen, everyone here is helpful, informative, and "gets it". as Superman said: whatever you do will be better than what you have so choose what you think will help you sleep at night. Then don’t look back. The waiting and pre-decision time can be the hardest. Please keep...

Extreme Anxiety, Minimally Invasive, Ross Procedure, and Life Expectancy

Everyone here has a point, but in the end, i believe it's a very personal choice. My father had a mechanical valve and took coumadin for decades. My husband opted for a Ross procedure almost 20 years ago and had to redo his AV two years ago. Both were/are very pleased with their choices...

My Experience with the Ross Procedure

Hi Anand, Joey's aortic valve started leaking severely (dilated ascending aorta and dysfunction of left leaflet) after 17 years. In addition, his mitral valve started leaking as well (hence the repair ring). His left ventricle was enlarged as a result. hope this helps!

    Abandoned operation

i'm sorry you are going through this, Katy. Did the drs do all the required tests prior to your surgery (cath, TEE)? If not, how did he conclude that your valves were leaky enough to warrant surgery? if he did, i'm as lost as dick and maybe do seek another opinion. Sounds odd to me as well...

Double valve replacement story, 2nd surgery, 9 days post op

Hi Cooperman, it is my understanding that from all the manipulation of the heart in surgery, sometimes a fib follows. My husband Joey went into a fib 4 days post op when he had his ross procedure in 2001. Prior to surgery he had several bouts as well and was on sotolol ( betapace) preventatively...

    Tissue vs mechanical

Hi Greeny, valve choice is a very personal thing. There is no right or wrong choice- either is lifesaving. My dad had a mechanical valve ( st. Judes)for some 20+ years (passed away at 86, that valve served him well). My husband had a ross procedure at 49 and needed to have the valve replaced 17...

    Apple watch users out there?

Joey loves his Apple watch. He got it last year before his OHS and it helped keep track of his heart rate and EKG. Initially, it frequently alerted him that he had fallen because it reacts to certain movements. Eventually it became aware that these are movements he normally does and adapted. He...

My Experience with the Ross Procedure

Hi M, my husband, Joey, had his RP in sept. 2001 and had a re-op in jan. 2019(also by the same surgeon who did his first surgery), this time replacing his aortic valve with a bovine. Joey is now 68 (today). The reasoning for the larger bovine valve was that, in the future, when the valve...
