? dabigatrin or apixaban for Alice

I agree with everyone. But the only concern to bring up is the increase of incranial hemmorhage (ICH) with warfarin in older patients. I know many older patients are treated sub therapeutically with warfarin to reduce the risk of ICH. If I was stable with warfarin, I would find it hard to...

Major stressin here - Valve replacement in 10 Days!

I had my valve replaced in August. Honestly the wait was more difficult than the actual surgery. I relaxed mainly by thinking about my recovery, and ready for this life long wait to be over with. Once I woke up post surgery, I was so focused on being a great patient for the staff, on walking...

Significant Difference between Lab and InRatio2 Meter

I turned my meter back in because of the wide variance. It is convenient for me to go to the coag clinic weekly, so that's what I am doing.

    Switching from Warfarin to Coumadin

Generic warfarin is allowed a certain variability by the FDA, so a 5mg dose might have a variability range of 15% (not sure what the exact percentage is). So this means that a 5mg dose might be a little more potent in one batch, and less potent in the next batch. Also there is variability...

    Altitude and Warfarin

I too live in Colorado and go into the high country all the time. I haven't noticed any abnormal INR changes, but I have never checked my INR while I am there. Hope you have a great trip!

Comprehensive list of foods and their Vitamin K content?

Sorry, this is for training, the meter, and all the testing materials here in Colorado. I think I will be able to deduct this as a medical expense, but will need to check that out completely. Thanks

Comprehensive list of foods and their Vitamin K content?

At ;east once a week. Ideally, and I don't know if insurance will accept this, is to test at home each week and test at the coag clinic each week. This way I can get comfortable with the variances, and learn how to self adjust safely. With my job I am at the hospital where my coag clinic is a...

Comprehensive list of foods and their Vitamin K content?

I have United, and they just approved a coagucheck (spelling is probably off). For a co-pay of $46/month I will get the monitor and supplies.

Comprehensive list of foods and their Vitamin K content?

Totally agree with you Pellicle. That is why I am trying to stay on top of my diet and my vitamin K intake. In fact there are studies out there that suggest those who do home monitoring actually reduce their risk of major bleeding and stroke by about 50% (couldn't remember the exact numbers)...

Comprehensive list of foods and their Vitamin K content?

I am fairly new to this, so I am trying to maintain consistency in my vitamin K intake. I know the data suggest that warfarin patients are not in therapeutic range about 50% of the time. That scares me, so I downloaded an app onto my phone that give me the amount of vitamin k in food. The app...

    Sternum Pressure from Thoracic Aneurysm?

1 week post op and doing well!

So glad everything is going well. I had my surgery just over 6 weeks ago, and for the past two weeks my resting HR is back to its pre-surgery level of around 60. Sleeping will come easier with time, at about three weeks I was back to my normal patterns. I wish you the best in your recovery...

    Lovenox Injections

Gary, I don't think Lovenox will show up on any INR machine. I wonder if there is just a difference between your monitor and the monitor at the hospital. I hope you feel better.

Surgery Report and recovery - day 1 to 3 weeks

Mike, Thanks for sharing your experience. I am about 10 days ahead of you, having my surgery on 8/12, and had a similar bout of A-Fib and pericardial effusion. My surgeon says the fluid build up is somewhat rare, but when it does happen, it usually occurs in younger patients that have a...

    Five week post op update

Heather, Your postings are awesome. I am a week behind you in this process, and reading your updates inspire me to do the things I am doing now. I am so happy you are feeling great. I too am feeling great at 4 weeks, walking 4-5 miles a day, going out to dinner, going to high school football...

    The Surgeon Choice...

I stayed close to home, and am so happy I did. I have a great relationship with my surgeon and his staff, and they will take my calls when ever I call. My deciding factor on location was the ability to stay close to my family, and the 100% trust I had in my surgeon. Just my 2 cents. Best of...

Long term implications of your valve choice when you get other heath issues

From what I understand, warfarin inhibits vitamin K only in the coagulation cascade at factor 2, 7, 9, and 10. Warfarin does not interfere with the bodies utilization of vitamin K anywhere else. So the best thing to do is be consistent with your vitamin K intake. That way the coag clinic can...

    Xarelto

Eliquis has the best data for A-Fib. It is the only newer agent that had less major bleeding than warfarin, 31% RRR, was superior to warfarin in reducing stroke and embolism, and the only newer drug that was superior to warfarin in all cause mortality Preety impressive. Like Xarelto it is a...
