Tissue valve deterioration - signs, symptoms, etc.

So I have this tissue aortic valve that is almost a year old. I know I will need to get it replaced perhaps 10-15 years from now. Here is my question: how should I expect the deterioration of the tissue valve to go, and when will I know that it needs to be replaced? As the tissue valve...

    36 hours post op

Hey, I made it. AVR with bovine tissue valve at Cleveland Clinic on 11/27. First day post op was rough, as I was nauseous and then felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest for about six hours. But I think I ( hopefully) turned the corner tonight and now feel quite good, just some soreness...

How do they restart the heart at the end of surgery?

Do they use paddles? Or do they just take you off the heart-lung machine and it starts back up? I don't know. I'll ask my surgeon, but that meeting's not for another month and I'm just curious.

Why sleeping in recliners after surgery?

I'm reading a lot of reports of people sleeping in recliners for a while after surgery? Why is that? Does it hurt to lie flat on your back? Or is it a matter of difficulty getting in and out of the bed? I have a recliner but it's pretty small and I'd rather not sleep in it too much.

Surgery in Cleveland - Where to have heart cath?

I'll be traveling to Cleveland for surgery in a few months. I need to have heart cath done before the surgery. I have tentatively agreed to have that procedure done in Cleveland as well. They told me I could have it done in my hometown if I wanted to, but I figured it would be better to have...

Mini-sternotomy AVR - How long before I can travel abroad?

I'm having surgery in late November to replace my aortic valve. The surgeon is planning a mini-sternotomy. I am 40 years old and otherwise in good health and I enjoy traveling abroad, sometimes to wacky third world countries. How long after the minimally invasive surgery should I plan on...

How rapidly did your aortic symptoms develop and worsen ?

So I've got aortic regurgitation and stenosis. Cardiologist #1 recommended prompt surgery back in May. I have dilly-dallied a bit, as I have been asymptomatic and irt didn't feel like an urgent need to me. Cardiologist #2 (second opinion) recommend another TEE, this is scheduled for Saturday...

Why no driving for up to 6 weeks after surgery?

I've read a lot of things saying that doctors recommend no driving for up to 6 weeks after open heart surgery? Why is that? Is this a reasonable and necessary restriction that doctors place on their patients, or are they being overly cautious? Is it mostly because you are on painkillers or can...

AVR recommended after endocarditis therapy due to risk of embolism from vegetation?

Hi everyone- This is my first post. I've known for decades that I would probably need AVR at some point. I'm 40, I've have moderate to severe aortic regurgitation for a long time, but no symptoms or dilation of the heart yet. I had an echo in February; there was no discussion of surgery. In...
