    Extreme exercise

Thank you for this information. Good to know how they test these valves! That give me some good feeling about my rides.

    Extreme exercise

Do any guidelines exist on this? I have a mechanical aortic valve and am also riding my bike frequently (11.000 miles last year). Several times a week I am riding my bike in my anaerobic zone (i.e. high hearth rate and blood pressure) and I am sometimes thinking on the possible negative effects...

    2 years today

Exactly 2 years ago I had my surgery. Aortic valve replacement. I had a mechanical valve placed when I was 47 years old. No problem so far, still ticking. :) I do a lot of cycling (3 or 4 times a week) without any issues. No medication, except for the anti-coagulation and my physical health is...

Has anyone compared home testing with lab test for accuracy?

I have a Coagucheck XS and I have compared this with another Coagucheck XS and lab vein draws when I was in hospital. Difference was 0.1.

How many have had minimally invasive AVR?

I have had a mini AVR. A 3 inch cut in the sternum. My ribs on the right side hurted a lot after surgery. Took me more than 9 months before I was completely out of pain and I sometimes still feel a sternum pain. I guess the surgeon had to really force my sternum open to get good access to the...

    TEE

I have had a TEE, but here in the Netherlands it is not standard to be sedated. Only thing I got was a spray in my mouth that will sedate my throath/tongue. For me the TEE was okay, no problems and only took 10 minutes. Advantage without sedation is that you are directly fine to go home.

    MRI question

I have a Sorin mechanical valve and this is MRI safe. I have found some information on MRI compatibility on their website and the temperature may rise about 1.5 degrees in a 3T MRI scanner (if I remember correctly). This information is only talking about temperature increase. It is the RF that...

    1 year post-op today

A small update after exactly 1 year. May 20th 2014 I had my aortic valve replaced with a mechanical valve. A Sorin bicarbon slimline for the people who want to know. :) This Sorin valve is european (I am from the Netherlands, Europe) and used as standard brand by the surgeon. I did not know...

    Bicuspid or not Bicuspid

I have had a TEE last year Feb. This TEE showed the aortic valve to be tricuspid. I have had surgery in May and the surgeon told me that 2 cusps were fused and slightly calcified. These fused cusps were not clearly visible on the TEE.

    Question about sternum pain

Yes, it was more a soreness than pain. I have been thinking about the reason for this and in my opinion it is caused by the fact that with a full sternotomy the 2 complete chest halves are opened, where with the mini sternotomy only a part is opened. The ribs are sort of bonded together, and...

    Question about sternum pain

Hello, I have had my aortic valve replaced via a mini-AVR. I have a 3 inch scar at the sternum. I have had some pain, but it never was very high on the pain scale. I have used pain killers in the hospital and for the first week at home. However, it was not a very nice feeling and it feels like...

Resuming bicycling after OHS - sternum healing

I had surgery May 20th this year. I was riding my mtb (on the road) 4 weeks after surgery. Just a short 30 minute ride. I did this every other day. I chose my mtb because of the comfort compaired with my road bike. One week later I rode the bike for 45 minutes. Ofcourse my sternum was not...
