    Over 2 1/2 years now....

It's not my anniversary, but it is the beginning of a new year, ....a year which i may or may not have seen without my surgery. I'm 43 now and had a severely dilated LV, but NO symptoms. A minor car accident led to the discovery of a bicuspid vavle, and 2 months later, i was fitted with the...

    After mechanical heart valve surgery

Aspirin may be combined with Warfrain. Metoprolol for regulating blood pressure, but discontinued for me since my heart rate is usually lower around 60 and metoprolol makes it go even lower. Lisinopril daily as well.

    One Year Anniversary!

My 1 year anniversary is coming up in a few days. It is definitely time to reflect on an interesting year that has been mostly positive. I got a mechanical valve (On-X)last August, because i was discovered with a bicuspid vale and my heart was enlarged quite a bit. Everything went quite normally...

    Amiodarone Post Surgery

I was on it for a month exactly. I don't recall any symptoms but ya it stays in your system for about 6months to a year. It hides in fat cells apparently. I was told its very important to have to avoid post surgery afib etc.

    My AVR Experience!!!

I've been meaning to post another update here for posterity. I'm 2 months post-op now and i feel almost 95% normal. I still had some chest pain (doing only certain things) and that is beginning to also go away. I am back to work 100% (3rd week actually), and most days i forget i had heart...

Should I get button down shirts for post surgery?

I'm on my 5th week post op and today is my First day at work. I have been wearing round necks and full sleeved t-shirts so far. I found that wearing it and taking it off wasn't too bad at all, and since i had to do it only once a day, its not a big deal. On the other hand, anything with buttons...

How did you deal with anxiety and depression?

Hi NewbieSlo, I found out, quite accidently, a few months back that i had a bicuspid valve that needs replacement immidiately. I am 41, married with 2 kids, and had a pretty good life, with no health issues. It hit me hard and everything seemed to come crashing down. But as i started reading...

Nervous about Surgery and the Odds

Hi BlueSue, I am 4 weeks Post Op now. I'm 41, had a bicuspid valve and got the replacement mechanical valve. I was also confronted with same thoughts. I prepared all my accounts etc to be joint with wife, and other things in case i dont make it. But i was told by everyone that my odds are better...

    Question about sternum pain

Hi ajc, I'm not 4 weeks Post-Op. I'm 41 and everything has gone pretty smoothly. I had the Aortic valve replaced with a mini sternotomy. There were a few times i felt sharp pain, and that was when they tried to turn me side to side in the bed. Mostly the pain was encountered getting in and out...

    INR Target

I am now at 2.0 with a week spent on stable and consistent dosage. Let's see if it holds. My doctor has basically said 2.0 is a good no for me. I am also on a daily Aspirin. I am wondering what other On-X valvers have been set for INR target.

    My AVR Experience!!!

Today I complete 3 weeks post op. Mostly it has gone well. The rate of improvement slows overtime but still everything is improving. I am walking 4-5 miles a day broken up into 3-4 walks. I don't feel tired at all, so that's pretty good. I have stopped any pain meds during the day, but am taking...

Life of a repaired aortic valve?

I can't really comment on how the repair lasts, and every case might be different. I just got mine replaces with On-X 3 weeks back. I struggled with this a lot too. I sent my case to cleveland and they gave me percentages of repair success etc etc. Stanford also told me repair is possible but...

Help needed on choosing the promising mech. aortic valve - St.Jude v/s On-X

My research said that there isn't a big difference in all of the mechanical valves even though some are marketed differently. I went with On-X since they claim lower INR levels can be used. Its not as old as the St Jude, but designed by the guy who invented the St Jude. In those terms i was...

    Here we go then.

All the best. I'm on day 19 after the surgery. Even though it feels like the days go by real slow, i cant believe it's almost 3 weeks and i'm done with it. It hasn't been too bad either. Just take ur pain meds on time and as u need them.
