No history of any issues until suddenly at 42 I went from running, hiking and being really active to not being able to climb stairs. Doctors say that I had probably had stenotic condition and then the valve leaflets broke off. Their best guess is that when I had scarlet fever (3 years) or strep (multiple severe cases 9 to 11 years old) I must have contracted rheumatic fever.

Hiking, travelling, trail running, gym, photography, reading and writing.

Mitral valve replacement, 4/30/09 at age 43. Porcine valve, minimally invasive surgery (did not crack chest, entered between right side/ribs)
