I just got this email from my sister, and while it admitedly exaggerates a bit:) , it has a bit of truth to it. My DH has yet to put on a "winter coat" this winter (except for the day they played a round of golf on lake Bemidji), and goes out in his t-shirt to start the car. Otherwise he wears a hooded sweatshirt.

Another thing is, that the schools have been "open as usual" around here, other than Monday morning when it was -26 (without the windchill factor), the schools here in town were delayed 2 hours.

People really do walk around in shorts and t-shirts as soon as the thermometer hits 50 degrees...in the Spring, however, as soon as it drops to 50 degrees in the Fall...some take out their winter jackets!

Everything Is Relative
60 above zero:
Floridians turn on the heat.
People in Minnesota plant gardens.

50 above zero:
Californians shiver uncontrollably.
People in Duluth sunbathe.

40 above zero:
Italian & English cars won't start.
People in Minnesota drive with the windows down.

32 above zero:
Distilled water freezes.
The water in Bemidji gets thicker.

20 above zero:
Floridians don coats, thermal underwear, gloves, wool hats.
People in Minnesota throw on a flannel shirt.

15 above zero:
New York landlords finally turn up the heat.
People in Minnesota have the last cookout before it gets cold.

Zero:
People in Miami all die.
Minnesotans close the windows.

10 below zero:
Californians fly away to Mexico .
People in Minnesota get out their winter coats.

25 below zero:
Hollywood disintegrates.
The Girl Scouts in Minnesota are selling cookies door to door.

40 below zero:
Washington DC runs out of hot air.
People in Minnesota let the dogs sleep indoors.

100 below zero:
Santa Claus abandons the North Pole.
Minnesotans get upset because they can't start the Mini-Van.

460 (-459.67 F below zero):
ALL atomic motion stops (absolute zero, zero on the Kelvin scale.)

People in Minnesota start saying..."Cold 'nuff fer ya?"

500 below zero:
Hell freezes over.
Minnesota public schools will open 2 hours late.

My son in central Wisconsin grilled out Sunday just before the superbowl. He said the wind chill was only 20 or so below zero, and the bacon burgers he made (my very own recipe) were delicious. The hardest part, he said, was getting the starter fluid to light.

Warmest day we have had for several weeks. the snow from 5 days ago is about gone....but, heard on Atlanta news the cold will come back. I can take the cold, but not the wind with it.. .......What is funny..our upstairs closet has the heavy coats from years ago..but, we never put them on?... I am fine with a good thick sweater..I just hate the heavy coat in the car..On/off...just to go inside the grocery store, ect....Hubby does leave a heavy coat, gloves on back of sofa at front door to walk the dog. Our heavy coats that are 15 years old:D ..was when we had school age kids..(Friday night Football, ect)..and had a horse farm..where we had to wear them to feed horses, ect. in the winter. Now, that we are retired..not much outside to do......Jean, I gave my son a Carhartt hooded jacket for Xmas. he had it on yesterday..Said, that's all he has needed this winter. So warm..paid $50.00 for it............so, I think tomorrow, I will gather up all these coats, flece pullovers, ect. and take them to a shelter somewhere.:) I know, now, we will never wear them anymore..Just taking up closet room.:p Bonnie

Ray's is not a Carhart...it's a Walmart special, prolly cost $9.87 or something:) Normal people do wear heavy jackets when it is below zero...my hubby is NOT normal:p

Wes tossed the jacket in back seat after a few hours of out shopping with him..I picked it up and hung it over the driver's seat. I was in the back..I had a chance to look close at it..It was lined a tad better than the Wal-mart hooded sweatjackets.Still light-weight..I have several Wal_mart sweatpants..love them:) .........I love Carhartt clothes.Especially the little over-alls for the Grands..:D Hard to find a place that sells them......Bonnie

From Florida - and then we stay inside and wait for it to warm up to 75. as a kid growing up in Miami they closed the schools when it was 50. we had no heat in the schools, nor in our houses. when it got really cool (50ish and above) we girls were allowed to wear slacks to school. no jeans, not even boys could wear jeans and tee shirts. Olden days

My mom went to elementary school in Key West and has alsways told us and my kids about school closing at those temps also. I think the whole temperature thing is funny. We have friends who live in Alaska and their college age son has female friends who wear flip flops almost yearround regardless of temperature. He told us last year when we were telling our oldest they weren't appropriate footwear for winter?!?! Obviously with his help she won and we lost....

We're not getting out of the deep freeze yet!

We're not getting out of the deep freeze yet!

Here is today's forecast:

TODAY: AM WIND-CHILL ADVISORY UNTIL 10 A.M. for wind-chills down to -35 below at times meaning that frostbite is possible to exposed skin in a matter of minutes. The rest of the day will be sunny with afternoon highs Near +8 ( wind-chills -5 to -10 below ). WNW 6 to 12 mph.

TONIGHT: Clear Skies. Low -6 below ( wind-chills -20 to -25 below ). NW 5 to 10 mph.

Believe it or not, when I turned on the TV this morning to check for school closings or late starts, there were NONE. My 10 year old daughter went out to the bus stop with nothing on her head:eek: she doesn't listen, or perhaps her ears are so frozen from yesterday, she couldn't hear me tell her to put a hat on this morning! After a few days of this stuff, we Minnesotans just settle into acceptance I guess.

WOW, That WAS a long time ago!;)

I had a boss who went to downtown Miami in the 80s and she came back complaining because there was NO HEAT in the hotel. A very famous one right on Biscayne Blvd in middle of downtown. If it's still there, there is no heat in it.
I bet most homes in Miami have no heat in them. Not needed.

That is pretty funny. We had the opportunity to move to South Dakota, and the weather was certainly one of our concerns. Anyone from the South who knows how long it takes for the body to get used to those temperatures?

I'll brag...it was about 70 and sunny here today. I have to brag quick, though, because it will probably be raining again soon. Then it will be HOT!

All I can say is BRRRRrrrrrr....

All I can say is BRRRRrrrrrr....

I live in Wisconsin and it has been incredibly cold here. I know this because when I walk to class in the morning and my eyes are watering so bad I can't see where I'm going...something is not right:p Maybe I should just stay home, who needs a college education anyways:D

Ew! Don't tell me this! I'm going to be going to MN in just four weeks. PLEASE tell me it warms up quickly between now and then. I'm just a simple southern gal who isn't too fond of cold. Don't know how I'm going to survive a week in MN if it's that cold. Especially since we'll have to walk from our hotel to the Mayo (granted, it's accross the street, but still). Thanks so much for the "cheery" news. ;)

Don't worry, Gnusgal...

Don't worry, Gnusgal...

Four weeks from now is a long time off. March is a good time for snow storms here in MN, but is rarely below zero. It may even be in the 40's if you're lucky...You just never know. Good luck with your trip!

I'm hoping you'll have a heat wave that week. ;) But chances are your temps will be at a record low, jut because I'm there... I never seem to bring GOOD weather with me. ;)

Just wanted to let you know that less than one week after I started this thread, we were in the 40's here in MN yesterday already!

Minnesota is very changeable and yesterday they said it was average weather for March 21st. It really shouldn't be too bad by the time you come up to Mayo. BTW, we were down there visiting Jackie 2 days ago. It was the first time I'd been there.
