Hi all and thanks for being here.

I have not been posting, but come and read everyday to check on the people here. I am having mitral valve repair/replace on June 20, kind of scared! I have a silly little question! Do I have to remove my acrylic nails before surgery? I have my presurgery workup on JUne13 and will ask then too! Thanks for any replies. Best wishes to all of you fantastic people for helping us out!!

Ditto to Ross' post. You have to remove the acrylics. You may be able to remove just a couple on each hand but what would be the point of that?

Maybe

You may get by with taking one off on each hand but you need to ask the surgeon. If they are trimmed short they may not be a problem but then why would you need them. After you are feeling better that would be such a nice treat to go and get a pedicure and have a manicure with new acrylics.

yep. Many years ago I had emerg gall bladder surg - the nurse appeared out of nowhere with her trusty bottle of remover and cotton balls to remove my nail polish. They check your nail beds during surgery for normal color.

I appreciate your answers to my post. Thanks a million.

I have wore acrylic nails for years. I have had four major surgeries within the last five years and have never had to take them off. I only had to remove one on each hand, which I usually removed the nails on my little finger. I guess it really depends on your hospital and your doctor. Mine are not the expensive kind, I do them myself.

Good luck on your surgery. I'm sure you'll do just fine. You will be in my prayers.

You may be okay with your nails

Lisa -

I have acrylics that I have filled every 2 or 3 weeks. I checked beforehand and they told me that as long as I didn't have any polish and could see the nailbeds, I could leave them on.

Knowing that I'd be out of commission for the couple of weeks after surgery, I had my acrylics filled (and left them unpolished) the day before I went into the hospital. For those first couple of weeks post-op, it was nice to look down and see my clean little tidy fingernails.

Yesterday I finally got to my nail salon for the first tme since my surgery (a month ago today!). What a treat.
