I have not been active here in years, but I need help. I've had my mechanical valve since 2002 and have been home monitoring MOST of that time. Over the last 19 years I've changed insurances and home monitoring companies a number of times. However, now I'm struggling. Acelis Connected Health, the company I'd been going through for INR monitoring contacted me in June to tell me they no longer accept my insurance. I contacted my insurance company (Scott & White Healthcare) to see if they could tell me who did take them before contacting my cardiologist. Unfortunately, the rep that I was talking to only came up with one possible company. I tried contacting them, but they wouldn't tell me if they took my insurance until my cardiologist sent in the orders. It took a MONTH to get the orders sent. The doctor's office would say they sent it, but the company would tell me they hadn't received it. Last week I finally got confirmation that they had received the orders and they got my insurance information. I didn't hear from them the rest of the week, so this morning I called. All I was told was "we are out of network for your insurance." 🤦‍♀️ So now I have no idea who to contact. I sent a message to my cardiologist's office, but all I got was "You can always go to a lab." (My cardiologist does not have many patients on coumadin because she is a pediatric cardiologist.)

I don't want to go to a lab. I don't like being a pin cushion. I've been doing home testing for 18+ years, even before it was common! Why, when there are so many more options available am I suddenly unable to get it covered?!

Does anyone know of a home monitoring company that takes Scott & White Healthcare?

Oh, it isn't very good to be without insurance. Unfortunately, doctors themselves are subject to this.

I use RemoteINR.com and it is covered by my Anthem BCBS.

I copied this info from their website:

Working with Remote INR

Remote INR is designed to help you enjoy the freedom of INR self-testing.
When you receive your new CoaguCheck Vantus, the Remote INR team will teach you how to use it. Representatives can answer any questions you might have about the process of test your INR. After your meeting, they’ll remain available to provide ongoing support.
Starting with the Remote INR portal is easy. Just call 1-800-780-0675 today. Your doctor will then be contacted for the prescription information needed to start your enrollment process.

Hi

Have you considered buying a Roche yourself and just self testing and self administering?

I'm sure you'd be a shoe in for doing it
I don't believe that one can legally get the Roche test strips in the US, and they are more expensive than Coaguchek. I still have a Roche meter from Acelis and use the weekly reporting service. They only charge the patient and/or insurance if you order supplies from them. I stopped ordering from them months ago. I have my own Coaguchek meter and order test supplies from Wilburn Medical. Just received my next year supply of 50 test strips for $215..
>>Gnusgal- I bet you were paying more for insurance co-pays. Yes? My insurance co-pays are ridiculous. This is the lowest cost method I've found.

I can't speak to "legally" but they are advertised regularly on eBay and quite a many members here use eBay as that source (and there are previous discussions on this topic, just not about "is it illegal to obtain and posess a supply of strips")

{Coaguchek strip deal back alley}

I don't imagine that the FDA are doing busts on homes on this illegal medical trade

(...and it does seem weird that CoagSense is exactly providing these at the same time ... could be construed as some sort of protection for a local product against Big Pharma like Roche

if I was to be flippant about it)

🤷‍♂️

Exactly. Roche has agreements to only provide thru services. This helps assure high prices. Coagsense has no such agreements.

Probably I'm being over sensitive here but:

I wasn't being (intentionally) rude or accusative in my reply (in case it seemed to you I was.

Best Wishes
No not at all. I observe and agree that the US has Healthcare coverage issues.
I worked a career in the Pharma industry and witnessed first hand the drug pricing in US and other Countries. It's all about profits.

oh, and someone I know who may be the sister of someone I was married to is in sales in the Pharma industry ... this person and I have great conversations at the dinner table (often easter or christmas) about anticoagulants and how shlt warfarin is. I'm sure you can imagine how it goes when she doesn't have a degree (and it seems a short memory about me). You know me ... unwilling to have an argument.

LOL

If you were in Europe I could show you how to buy a box of 24 tapes for around 60 euros, alternatively you could find a good price on ebay.

I go to a lab that does coag and the finger prick like the ones you do at home. Nothing to fear from that and most hospitals have a coag lab. Ask yours if they have one. Mine is run by a cancer department.

It's good that my friend, a doctor himself, uses Finity Group consultants to help him manage his finances and insurance. There's a chance here of not being left on the breadline. I hope your situation is resolved and you can promptly get the medications and care you need. Of course, in advertising, the specialists at Baylor Scott and White Health, with over 150 specialty departments, are with you from diagnosis to recovery. Maybe they think you are already cured.
