Does anyone have experience of prolonged atrial flutter/fibrillation after OHS.
I've had my bicuspid aortic valve replaced (St Jude mechanical with warfarin)and a left atrial radiofrequency ablation procedure 4 weeks ago.I've now had futter/fibrillation for 3 weeks.I've seen my cardiologist and am on atenolol(beta blocker) ramipril (ace inhibitor),forosemide and amiodarone now 200mg od.If it wasn't for this dysrhythmia I'd be feeling really good.My cardiologist says I will either spontaneously revert to sinus rhythm or need a cardiversion after 6 weeks post op.
My questions are.Is the prolonged flutter/fibrillation harmful? Does cardioversion sort it out or does the problem return with 12 months?I'd be grateful for advice from anyone who has experienced this.

Hi, there!

I know how upsetting it can be after surgery to have to deal with an abnormal heart rhythm. However, your situation is different from mine. My mitral valve was repaired, and I had V-Tach for a while after (ended up having an ablation last December after trying all kinds of meds).

Afib is weird. It's hard to say what it will do. Normally, you'll convert on your own in time, but if not, then cardioversion is in order. Will it return? Usually not, but sometimes, yes. There is no way to predict it.

A-fib can be dangerous because it can cause clots. Therefore, people with a-fib are almost always put on coumadin. I am not sure if a-flutter causes clots.

I have been in constant a-fib for 5 years. Since I usually don't feel it, we have decided not to intervene but I do have a higher INR range to compensate. I would feel better without the a-fib but I have had enough procedures to last a lifetime.
