I will probably have a med alert bracelet made not that I am on coumadin and now that I have a pacemeker. What is the best wording for the bracelet as far as one being on coumadin and I guess having the pacemaker.

I assume you don't have anything on it for aortic valve replacement.

I got my bracelet from Medic Alert and after putting all my information on the order (I did it online), I checked the box that said "let us word" and they put what is important on my bracelet. They put the following information on mine: Aortic Valve Replaced, Anaphylaxis to all iodines, sulfa and takes coumadin. With Medic Alert, you pay a yearly fee for their service, but they also keep all your information on file and there is an 800 number for medical personnel to call to get your contact information, including your doctors names and phone numbers. You can log into the service whenever you want and make whatever changes you need to so that everything is always up to date and accurate. I know alot of people don't want to pay the yearly fee, but since Mark and I go out of town all the time during the spring, summer and fall, it was really important that it be easy for emergency personnel to get ALL my information in one phone call. Not that I don't trust my DH, but sometimes he forgets little crap!!!!

Check back in the Small Talk Forum section a few weeks back....I started a thread for this.
These 2 things are imperative to have on it: (and add your pace maker)
Mechanical aortic valve
Anticoagulated

I have a Medic Alert bracelet too. Mine has 5 Lines of info. on it including my home phone

If you are active I would recommend the Sport band they offer.

I initially ordered a nice sterling silver bracelet and during the order process they flashed up a special on the sport band so I ordered one too. I rarely wear the silver bracelet. I really like the Sportband.

My husband convinced to put my name in full, St. Jude mechanical A & M valves, my patient no. at UCLA. On the back, my GP's, hubby's cell & work, and home's phone nos., and that I take Warfarin. Later, I changed my mind that it was too much info, but the assistant told me it was fine and somehow better. When I received my bracelet, I was surprising happy with it and not that noticeable but enough in case of emergency.

If you care for symmetry, choose the chain below. Mine is in silver sterling and I love it.

Good luck.

I got my bracelet from James Avery. It has the Caduceus (sp?) on the front and simply says Coumadin on the back, and I have a spare because I misplaced mine for about 2 weeks that says Warfarin. I figure unless my heart is stopped, they will figure out that I either have a mechanical valve or a bomb in my chest! I also carry my St. Jude's wallet card. I've spoken with many EMTs and police and they say they look in wallets, on back of watches, necklaces, shoe tags, etc. for the information. However, the first thing they look for is a bracelet. They really don't use all the extra information, although once you are stabilized, the hospital might.

All of those doc phone numbers, home/cell phone numbers, and my additional meds are on my file with Medic Alert.
They have a 24 hr phone service. No need to post it all on the bracelet.

Medic Alert decal for car

Medic Alert decal for car

Don't remember if anyone has mentioned it, but Medic-Alert provides a sticker for cars.
I have one on a side window of my Honda CRV. Hopefully, it would be noticed if I were in a car accident (providing that window wasn't obliterated).

I have my name, home phone #, taking coumadin and mechanical aortic valve on the front. On the back I have graft on ascending aorta with the name of my cardiologist's group and phone #. I thought the price was reasonable.

I happen to have the name and web site. Last night, someone saw mine and asked me about it. She needs one so I told her I would get the information for her.

I have the Medic Alert one, says "prosthetic aortic valve; antcoagulated;allergic to sulfacotrimoxazole" There is a toll-free number and my ID number. They keep my current doctors, meds etc. on file.

I also keep a card in my wallet with my dostors, current meds, two next of kin (in case I am with DH when something happens, they can then find my parents, or vice versa)

I figure if you are lying dying on the side of the road, anticoagulated is about the most important thing they need to know. by the time they get you to a hospital for treatment, they should have had time to call Medic Alert and get the rest of the info.

Gee, I never got a sticker from Medic-Alert :(
I put all my information on a cue card and placed in the visor - under the garage door opener.

Gonna check out Medic-Alert

Well, there is no such thing as a sticker listed on their web-site. I've sent an e-mail, so I guess we'll have to wait and see what they have to say.

I don't think I got any information on my mechanical valve with the exception of it being mechanical and a number 23.

You will get a card from St. Jude with all your information on it including the serial number, etc......It took about 30 days to get mine and since you are just a few weeks out from surgery, it should be coming soon!

Kaj... thanks that is a great website, I marked it to go back and take a good look. I would like a necklace so I don't "always" have to wear the bracelet.

A word of caution; I had mine made in 1978 and it is really beautiful. I' have been taken in twice by ambulance, and not one person noticed the bracelet. They ALL said it was too pretty and the emblem was not prominent enough. Well, mine is quite prominent, but it is so artfully done it isn't what you are used to seeing.

Sticking with the standard appearing Medical Alert symbol is probably best.

Mine has a lot of info about things Emergency Services needs to know... That I have Medtronic Freestyle, I have a Right Sapphous DVT, I'm anticoagulated and allergic to sulpha drugs and opiates.

I have the necklace and take it off to go to bed and when I bathe.

I feel like this is a dumb question- but I'm guessing there wouldn't be a need for this if you have a tissue valve and are not on a blood thinner............???
Just wondering.......I have several drug allergies, but never thought of doing it just for them.
